This seems like a great site. This is my 1st post here.

I have a brand new '06 Freightliner Columbia with a 470 CAT motor. It is fully loaded and very comfortable.

My only issue is with the, factory set, engine idle shutoff timer. Does anyone know how to disable this setting without going to a dealer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the ones now are controlled by software rather than a mechanical device. So the dealership, or someone with the software is the only one that can change the settings. if you just bought an 06, it should still be under warranty and you should have no problems getting it changed to meet your preferences. Iif it belongs to someone else and you are the driver, no dealer will touch it without their permission.

I dunno if CAT programs their idle shutdown the same way as Cummins but with a Cummins if you feather the accelerator during the final 30 seconds before shutdown, it disables the idle shutdown until the next time you restart.

Then I guess his only option is to invest in the software and change it himself.

The way that this usually works is that within the warranty period, the dealership will make the requested changes for free or at minimum cost, but only for the registered owner of the truck. After the expiration of the warranty period, the owner of the truck will have to pay for the password to access the software for the truck to have it done. Had some friends that had their engines changed from 435 to 500 hp after a rebuild, and the change required some small parts like pressure sensors, but required the password to reprogram the ECU of the engine to bring it up to the required rating.

But agaoin, if he is not the owner and is only the driver of the truck, no reliable mechanic will touch it. If the owner of the truck specified a 5 minute timer on the truck, then the driver changing it would be doing that against the owner's wishes, and the dealership is not going to take any of the heat and responsibility for that. And as soon as the paramaeters get downloaded, that change will stick out like a sore thumb.
