Times change Ive been an OO for 26 years, the only thing I have ever owned were big hoods with mechanical cats. I have not even drove an electronic engine. When you guys talk about files, exactly what are you saying? How much do they cost and how are they installed. Sorry if I sound ignorant but all I know is torque screw fuel screw and timing

Changing the files or program is just like you adjusting the timing advance, changing the spring so it starts slower or faster, changing the AFC setting. The only difference is that an electronic engine can do it, and compensate for a lot more variables.
Not all electronic engines are as capable as others.
Take an assortment of trucks with a three pedal automatic transmission out for a test drive, with an assortment of engines, make one of them a S60.

more then a half of ECMs use no calculations, they have fuel/air/timing/torque charts and simple if-yes ore no programs.

now mathematic models are used more widly and some ECMs use equations with coeficients, formulas and other stuff. They are more accurate and it is good for emissions.

fuel economy is not a purpose of ECMs now, all advanced ECMs are for saving enviroment. Early ECMs really did fuel milage gane, but newer engines E5 vs E3, like EGR vs non EGR do not save fuel. Euro-3 D12D on Volvo burns less fuel then VED12 EPA2007!
