this is equation with too many variable values, and it is a quation of high mathematics....

Anything mechanical rises no higher than #2 on the list of important factors when considering fuel mileage.

The driver is #1 on that list. How the equipment is driven & maintained has the biggest impact, positive or negative.

If you are looking at the a group of engines and want to know which one has the best fuel mileage there are EPA stickers on all engines. It has a section that has the number of MM3 of fuel it takes to make the rated HP. The lower the number the better. Driver, rolling resistance, aerodynamics, road conditions, weather, all have an effect.

Read somewhere that driver habits are the biggest impact on economy by as much as 30% same truck, same conditions 1 driver with good habits another with poor. Maintain it, and drive it right.

I'm not sure if Ure asking this because you're gonna buy a new truck if you are here is something worth considering : I've always driven 6*2 or 4*2 tractors, I know the scania r620 6*2 will do 8 - 10 mpg depending on terrain, weight etc, I've recently driven a 6*4 double drive scania r620 and it does 7-8 mpg max, that's a big difference, dice had a great thread and it dealt alot with frictional losses and these figures represent the findings on that thread, so it might be worth considering opting for a 6*2 lift axle instead of a 6*4 as it normally means 1-2 mpg because you will only have one diff instead of three and less shafts bearings etc,

I am consistently getting 15%-20% better mileage than 2 identically spec'd trucks on the same haul with the same load. I run the same speeds (even slightly faster). The biggest difference is that I keep the engine RPM in the optimum work zone, especially when climbing hills.
