All the truck manufacturers have good models and crap models. Stay away from the model trucks that the mega carriers use, those are the throw away crap models.

Doesn't really matter which kind you choose as long as it was built to to the job you need to do, won't break and will last while you earn a living.

And those trucks AREN'T the ones dealers are selling as used Mega Carrier tractors.

about volvo.... stay away from early D13, D12D is much better, but two EGR valves, so try to find with Cummins, especially pre EGR w/o expencive Turbo with VGT. Newer D13 with SCR (Euro-5/EPA2010) got expencive SCR units, and SCR is the weak point of any new truck. Volvo electronic system is complicated and expencive. And it is not all... try to find a good volvo technician....

shaker.... I vote for Century class and columbia. Simple, cheap and reliable.

    Ditto on what Pablo said.

I drive a volvo and would not recommend it to anyone who isn't handy with a wrench, or soldering iron. Electronic issues are big buck$$.

When you graduate from wanna-be to newbie you're probably not gonna have a whole lot of choice.

My personal choice is the F/L.

    Good luck.

-Freightliner dealers are everywhere. A very common truck and popular with fleets as they can be made uniform with the same results.
-Downsides of Freightliners. They have door latch issues (easy fix if you go to a autobody company). The split windshield is notorious for leaking and cracking. Mostly this is caused by the window gasket getting old and needs to be replaced. Otherwise a mostly dependable truck.

-Volvos are priced comparatively to freightliner. Maybe even slightly cheaper as they are a money pit. They have a smoother ride. The windows dont crack.
-Downside. This company is in Sweden. All Volvo parts are exhorbant pricey to buy / get. This applies to their cars as well. Volvo cost will be about 150% over freightliner cost. The electrical has major gremlins. Expect if there is a class 1 inspection that you will fail here somewhere. It really fails when it is raining.

This is my 2 pennies, from a non owner yet that has done the research. Brother in law swears by his volvo and thinks it is wonderful as he loves to tinker. I would rather make money.

As someone who has driven both, I'll take a Freightliner. Yes the volvo has a better ride, the freightliner wins in the rest of the markets. They are cheap reliable workhorses. The detroit diesel parts are cheaper compared to a Volvo, and the truck parts alone have significant lower cost compared to a Volvo.
