you could use por-15 ,it seals rust and gets hard as a rock, its used alot in auto resto on rusty floors etc. heck once you put the lid back on the can you cant get it off again, gotta poke a hole in the side. tough stuff

Por-15 breaks down fast in sun light. Its fine under a vehicle but on frame rails it will be exposed. It gets very dull and chalkey looking when in the sun for any length of time. However it can be toped with regular paint to prevent this. Rustoleum rusty metal primer and semi gloss black will last as long as many more expensive coatings if you do a good job blasting. I like extend after blasting but be sure to rough it up with some scotch bright before priming. If it comes off on the high spots its no big deal because it only needs to be in the low spots. (the pits). No matter what you do the rust will eventually come back again. Make it as easy as possible to do again. Dont use bed liner if you plan on doing it again. Sand blasiting rubber sucks. Imron and epoxy primer is probably the most durable but also the most expensive. I personally like Rustoleum paint and primer for thing like this and the price is also right. The only thing I dont like is the dry time. Some times Rustolium paint fells tackey to the touch for several days. Tractor enamel is also a good choice. You can even get hardner for it. Atleast the kind they sell at Tractor Supply Company.

Por-15 then top coat it. You can't hardly sand blast that stuff off. It will last longer than anything. Brush the por-15 on unless you have a down draft booth to use, and a fresh air mask and no exposed skin. That stuff is leathal when sprayed. Wear gloves when you brush it on tho, or you will wear it till its good and ready to come off.

Look up KBS rust coating. Its supposed to be an improved version of POR-15( rumor has it one of the guys that developed POR-15 went on his own and came up with it). Ive used it and its tough. It still has the uv issues but if you top coat it with paint you would probably have the ultimate coating. Buy the way they make it in gloss and satin black (and many other colors too) but if you are going to top coat it i would recomend the satin. I used the gloss and could hardly get sand paper to even scuff the surface. The gloss has such a hard shiny surface the paint wont bond and just peels off. It would probably be best if you top coat it with the paint before it is total dry so they bond together. it also says you can put it right over the rust but I strongly recoment still sand blasting.

I have used por 15 and chassis saver and as stated the sun destroy's them and if top coated you have to wait untill it is fully cured and sand it well or the topcoat will peel off. We use zero rust now it is a satin flat black and it sprays good with easy clean up you thin with laquer thinner and even when touched up months later from road debri or stones and such it blends and is hardly noticable. I used to buy it at a local auto parts but now i get it on line http://www.zero-rust.com/ we even paint our tag trailers and heavy equipment with the stuff.

i sand blast alot,i use a grinder in the outside of the rails to take out the pitting then reblast,i use nason full poxy primer and then coat with nason urathane and hardener,my truck is a bush truck and pounds gravel every day, this works and will last but yes it is expensive. but you dont need to do it every year,if you are going through all the work to strip it down and blast dont skimp out onthe paint and primer just my opinion, good luck, take your time.

I just ordered some zero-rust. I'm going to spray ospho on the frame rails and 5th wheel deck, then take a wire wheel to it, knocking down the remaining material. Afterwards I'll roll on some zero-rust, and spray the aerosol where I can't get the brush or roller.

I'll post some before and after pics of the project when I do it.

The zero-rust in black, for 1 gallon and also 3 cans of aerosol (with free spray handle) came to $99 including shipping.

What is best to remove from the frame while snadblasting?

I'm wondering about rust getting under spring hangers etc.
