I'm going to be sandblasting my frame rails in a month and I am looking for some tips. I'll have some decent scaring, should I fill it with something like fiberglass, bondo, etc. A friend suggested spraying it with truck bed liner. What are your thoughts? I'm looking for any tips on metal prep etc.

Aluma-Glas is good, body lead is better.
Note of caution: If you use one of the rust inhibitors (such as Extend from Loctite), many body fillers will NOT adhere to it.
Best bet after blasting is to use a good epoxy-based sealer/primer.

I would use something other than sand-you don`t want all that grit in any moving part. Also you can probably get some good tips from an body shop that restores old cars.

Coating a frame with "truck bed liner" is a REALLY bad idea. Endura or Imron paint are good choices.

    Cabover Mike Thanks this.

Instead of sandblasting, would soda blasting be a better option? At least I have heard of that being used when people have done cab off restorations. Or is it basically the same thing?

Soda blasting uses baking soda, but I have access to an industrial sandblaster, so that's what I'll be using with a trailer compressor. My main issues are around the drives, and they should be off the truck at the time anyway. Just looking for tips really. One guy recommended using Ospho after blasting to inhibit rust.

In the areas, like the steady bearing especially wrap it with towels and duct tape. I always recommend replacing all zerts after the job is done and it is painted. Cover the mirror even if you are twenty feet from then. The brakes, using a pressure washer in the slot of the backing plate slowly move the truck so the wheels do a 360 degree turn, to clean out the brakes.
The I use tremclad, but you need multiple coats, and do it right away after blasting, pressure washing, and blow drying.
I use cheap sand, for the bigger parts Cabs use the soda.

Cabover Mike and VisionLogistics Thank this.
