I have been loosing coolant. About a half gallon a week. MXS C-15 Cat@550/1850 with a OPT overhaul in January this year and another head gasket and head in July. We've done an oil analysis through Cat(everything good). Checked the engine precooler(everything dry), the transmission cooler, put a puke jug on the overflow(nothing after 3 weeks of running), checked all hoses(Peterbilt says that was the problem, but no leaks), heater core, etc. What else are we missing. My gut says another head gasket or head. Peterbilt says it has to be an external leak, but leaving it in my shop with the heat off all week end= no leaks on the floor. All thoughts appreciated, I'm getting tired of having this thing tore down every six months!

Well, I would document complaint to last shop to tear it down. With only a half gallon a week; keep it full and close check till it shows itself. Consider the posibility it may have been partly air locked from last tear down?

have you done a oil sample? if it checks out ok then i would say a crack in the head if they reused the original or reman or they dont have liner protrution up where it should be (cat has specs that are usally to low) or it wasn't checked also check the air compressor, see if your getting any water in the air tanks. i would say with the second head gasket and head they are not checking the liner protrution. went through the samething on my last truck. they screwed around with me until my warrenty ran out.

Got the oil sample results back today, everything is good. I will check the air tanks, good call, haven't done that in awhile. (Air dryers make me lazy)! When they did the head and head gasket in July, I stressed the liner protrusion, but I can't swear it's right(they say it was). This thing has been a real problem child! I wish I had my 6NZ back...

yeah just did my mxs acert 10000 miles ago. did the rebuild myself. what a pain in the backside. had some little issues but with the help of mr haney got it figured out. if i remember right the liner protrution from 1 to 6 can be no more than .004 differance and i think .002 from one next to the other. dont quote me my memory isnt that good. anything below .003 isnt good. if they did a opt there should be a record of what protrution was at when they checked it. if they checked it!! also hope they checked the deck of block also good luck.

Pushed out where? Do you mean head gasket? I have a puke bottle on the overflow tube out of the expansion tank. It is still empty after three weeks of running, so it's not escaping there.

If all it's loosing is a half gallon, it's a small leak for as much as you drive. I think me only is correct. Possibly going out the stack if you have no visual signs. My guess is head or head gasket with a hairline crack.

I know they do smoke test on cars. Can't they do it on a diesel engine?

My guess as well, my problem is my dealer doesn't want to go into it again. I'm sure they are worried about the charge back from Cat on the warranty work. If we go into it again, that will be three times in less than a year...not good! I don't need the down time, but then no one ever does!

if it was a head again you would loose all your water but what i am here is there is not leak so the head it not completely blown if you run it in a stressful scenerio like the mountains for a few days with a heavy load it should completely blow it and it should warranty
