Be sure and order extra switches and i had a 4 way light cord run to the back of the sleeper with switches wired in. If you want aftermarket beacons on the roof they will put brackets where you tell them and run the wiring and hook up switches.

    DL550CAT Thanks this.

Somewhat off the topic, but some similarities. This kinda fell into my lap today. I have a 2006 Intl 9400 with an ISX. Never have been fond of that EGR laden engine. The shop I use on a regular basis, I had been talking to the owner about an engine swap. He called me today that a 9400 with a pre-EGR 12.7 500 hp recently got wrecked. He had rebuilt the engine less than a year ago. He said he could get me the engine for about $8K and put it in my truck. I want to change the 3.42 rears in mine and he said he thought the other truck had 3.70's in it and the rears had been redone about the same time as the engine. Just swap rears for rears. Wiring harness issues, he can take care of and rewire if needed.

Had been looking at going the glider route, but this would be substantially cheaper and I would keep a truck that, other than the ISX, is a pretty solid work horse.

The reman'd parts came from another vehicle..they did not come off the shelf so it would meet the donor vehicle rule. That rule simply keeps you from buying all new parts... the glider is intended to make use of used parts.

My son's 379 technically didn't meet the rule since he bought a new transmission... but he didn't go to jail over it... who the heck is going to check it?

The first two outfits I drove for actually built used gliders... they bought salvaged trucks without running gear and rebuilt them to be used again. I drove a KW with a Cummins engine with a 5 speed Spicer and two speed Eaton rears on Mack camelback suspension... talk about a mongrel...

One of those companies wasn't Doty Bros. Equipment was it?.....

That sounds like some of their backhoes when I worked for them in the early 90's...We'd have hoes that were part "B"....Part "C".....Part "D" Cases....If you had one that had "E" parts...You were sheyating in tall cotton.....:biggrin_2559:

Nope... my first real OTR job was with Ristow trucking from Wales, WI. The next one was Dispatch Service, East Troy, WI.

Wilmer Ristow had a big fire at his shop (set by a disgruntled driver)... I drove a '62 Freightliner for him that had burned in the fire... the shop installed a used cab and sent it out the door. The cab electrical system featured three big wire nuts instead of switches... one wire nut (two wires) activated the fuel pump... another you just touched together to start the truck (then put the wire nut back on the hot lead) and the third wire nut combined all the outside lights.

What they didn't hook up was all the un-needed stuff like dash lites, fuel gauge, tach, speedo, oil pressure gauge, air pressure gauges and stuff like that.

My next job at Dispatch Service was even cooler... we had a few pairs of trucks with the same serial numbers... if you got stopped driving the truck with the license plate you just told the cop you must have lost the registration... if you had the truck with the registration but no plate you had to tell him you must have just lost it... never got nailed AFAIK.

Don't ask how they got the same serial numbers....

Here's one of those used gliders...#6524 (Year '65.... and the 24th truck in the fleet=#6524). Kenworth with a 250 Cummins and a 4X4 trans on KW torsion bar suspension. This photo was taken at Mid-South Refrigerated Warehouse in Memphis, TN in '72 or '73...

The KW to the left was #7025... 1970 non-sleeper with a 238 Detroit 5+3 speed rears. The Pete on the right I don't remember the fleet number but it had a 318 with a 4X4....maybe a '72 model.

A friend of mine just had two new Freightliner mid roofs built. He called Fitzgeralds first but it is a truck off their lot and their specs not yours. So he dealt with his local Freightliner dealer in Kansas. They came from the factory with reman pre-emission pre egr 500hp Detroits and reman 13 spd trans. The engine has a 3yr/300,000 mile warranty just like these new carb engines have. The only thing it didn't come with was the rears. He bought two rear cut offs from wrecks and had everything rebuilt, sandblasted and painted. When it was all said and done he had $105k in them each and no FET. I seen one of these trucks last week and they did a good job. He traded in his two new ones he bought in 2010 that got poor fuel mileage and sucked at power for these gliders. He is already getting a mile and half better per gallon then the 2010's and you can tell a lot of difference in the power.

Did he go with the columbia or cornando? Do you know what he's getting for mileage with that setup? What's he got in it for rears? What type of freight and weight is he pulling?

I sat down with the Pete dealer last thursday morning and speced a truck. I could not guarantee financing (cause I did not have time) and there where a few things that I wanted that would've needed run by engineering. Thats the reason for not gettting it done last week although they did approve financing later that day still had the engineering issue but that was no biggie either.
What I did find out is that Pete has raised production right along with the price. Instead of 13% discount off of list price they are only giving 5%. The truck I speced was $95000! thats without the motor and trans but new rears. I think I am going to make some changes after getting to think about it. My glider will be close if not over a 100k. I get some time I am going to back and actually put the order in. They are holding a spot for me but I have till July to get the orderWha in.

What do you all think of cab extenders on a 36" flat top? Its going to have a enclosed headache rack on the back. My thoughts are it would hide the gap between the 2 and look better. I know its a matter of opinion but its stupid stuff like that, that keeps me awake at night.

Supply and demand. Cab extenders and flat top hood? Look ridiculous imo but it's your money.
