12.7 DDEC4, get rid of wastegate?

I have a rebuilt Garrett GTA42 on my 2000 12.7 DDEC4 430/470, which has a wastegate on it now. What are the advantages/disadvantages to switch this to something like a BW 171702 without a wastegate?

really westgate is the thing to protect boost lines and avoid NOx (if ECM applies torque limiting at max power turbo keeps boosting air, so fuel:air ratio goes lean and it leads to additional NOx emission)

really some engines got no WG and run well

The 171702 in most cases is a great choice they improve fuel economy and spool faster! The turbine on the W\G turbo is smaller and to control drive pressure they use a wastgate to keep the compressor wheel within its efficiency range. And as stated to control emissions.

Can you upgrade to the BW 171702 without a ECM tune.

Removing or blocking the waist gate costs you fuel, putting extra air into the engine it does not need does no good. It can over-speed the turbo, the turbo on there is made to build boost early and keep it at a near constant level from 1100 to max speed, any other turbo without a waist gate could give you more boost,at higher speed, but a lot less at lower speeds.

Yes they are a good replacement turbo even without a tune! And they can be used with a modest tune as well so if later on you want to get a tune the turbo can handle it.

    I have a buddy who has a 14L s60 with a Pdi stg1. Tune with egr delete.
He would now like to delete the factory vgt turbo.
My question is what would be his best option for a turbo? Would this 171... Borg you guys are talking about work well or is it a 12.7 application only.

True. You are correct. But that mostly applies to slower city driving and such. That quick spool up is more for those that want to "get out of the hole" faster. The larger, non waste gated turbo will allow a greater exhaust flow thus keeping EGT's lower and the engine will run more efficiently. And you are using ALL the exhaust to build boost, that would be lost thru the waste gate. Why throw that energy away? When using the larger non waste gated turbos, you can actually generate more boost which also equates to not having to press on the accelerator so much to get a desire power when really working the engine out on the road. You don't need instantaneous spool up if you are working the engine properly. That stuff is for typical company driver mentalities. Not for the owner that drives his truck properly. There are many example of owner that have changed out the waste gate turbo for a larger non waste gate variety and have seen mpg increases of 1/2 mpg or more because of the increased engine efficiency.

Yes they work good on the 14L depending on how much power you want to make there are bigger options but they get pricey!!!
