Long story short bought a western star and had to do the motor in it from the start (600hp e model). New cat head, pistons, liners, rings, bearings etc. The truck missed bad and my mechanic put a cam sensor in it and runs much better now. BUT there is still a very slight miss at 16-1700. He thinks a weak injector but is not giving any codes. Any ideas would be appreciated. Honestly the truck pulls like a 475. Also my mechanic does not think it is the right turbo on it (replaced by previous owner).

Some times at a high idle speed you will hear a slight sputter or what you think is a miss. Under a load the engine should be smooth at the RPM you're hearing the miss. If you're trying to listen to the miss at a high idle speed, turn your engine fan on manually, it should clear up as the fan increases engine load to keeping turning at the steady state RPM. If the engine smooths out by doing this than I would say the miss is being caused by the ECM trying to maintain a steady RPM with no load, this would be considered normal.

This engine should pull much stronger than a 475. In a rare instances I've seen injectors get ruined during a rebuild. The reason this happens is some one was trying to clean them in a parts cleaner tank. The parts cleaner solution gets into the barrel and plunger of the injector and washes the fuel out. With no fuel or lubricant in the body of the injector, the barrel and plunger score each other. This causes the fuel to bypass around the plunger as it tries to raise the fuel pressure in the body of the injector to lift the needle off its seat in the nozzle. When this happens you don't get as much fuel injected into the engine for a major Hp lose. For CAT ET to pass an injector cut out test all six injectors have to be scored in a similar manner. This is why it's a rare occurrence, but I have seen it happen. The way to diagnose this is to install a new injector or two new injectors in the engine. If they are scored the engine will have a miss afterwards and low power output on the rest of the cylinders. It will then fail an injector cut out test on the remaining original injectors.

Just because an engine doesn't idle smoothly or high idle smoothly at a no load situation, you can't assume it has a bad injector

I bought a 2001 pete with a c-16 600 h.p. engine. After only 165,000 miles i lost a head gasket. Cat said it was an electrolisis issue. I had to replace liners, seals, rings, bearings, head, spacer and injectors. I ended up putting in a set of rebuilt injectors. Ever since the engine had a miss or a partial miss. It was hard to explain to people i was talking to what exactly it was doing. I had cat test it, and they said everything was fine. I had new hampshire pete test it and they said it was not throwing any codes. I finally talked to an older mechanic at cat who had a lot of experience with this sort of thing. He explained to me how often he had seen issues with cat reman injectors. So 3000.00 dollars later i had a BRAND NEW set of injectors. I went home and put them in, and this truck runs like a 600 again. I drove this truck for three years with this miss issue. I talked to many people that all had ideas of their own as to what the problem could be, and finally, it killed me to spend another 3000.00 on inectors that i had already bought, but what a difference. No more skip or miss. You could actually hear like a fludder out the exhaust when you drove along a wall or when you went under a bridge. But a brand new set of injectors, and she runs like brand new again. Cat reman parts are not what they are all cracked up to be! I will never use cat reman parts again. I wont get into the reman cylinder head that i bought when i rebuilt this engine. Lets just say i had to put another head on the engine at 194,000 miles. I hope this was helpful
