The ISX 15 uses the front gear train. The ISX 12 uses rear gear train. The mid range engines I believe are all rear gear train.
Maxxforce 13 the good, the bad, the ugly?

BTW, Mercedes V-designed engines - rear gears, new Volvo - rear gears, MAN TGA/Maxxforce - rear gears, Scania XPI 12L - rear gears.
really ISX 11.9 is not based on ISX 15. I'd say it is Scania XPI for USA. Fuel system is totally different, mechanically different engines, really different. Scania XPI got rear end mounted compressor, on US trucks compressors are generally in fron end of engine, so Cummins adds one more front gear -

The statement about cam timing is not correct. They (Intl) had an issue with a supplier providing incorrectly timed flywheels (very small batch) but there's no way to "jerk" it out of time. -
-
The cam timing thing is something I heard word of mouth, I have since obtained a service manual and counldn't really see how that could have been possible so thanks for clearing that up.
I have read in the service manual that the CT13 has jake brakes, I thought the Maxforce 13 had an exhaust brake only? -
Yes, the 13L has Jake Brakes. There is also a Pac Brake exhaust brake; however, it is used for back-pressure control (emissions reasons) and never functions as a legitimate exhaust brake.
Aside from the EGR issues, it's a very solid engine.Jas Thanks this. -
I have been working on these engines for around 3 years now we see ALOT of them, most common problems as stated above are, egr valves, coolers getting plugged up, egr bellows and exhaust manifolds leaking. which manifold gaskets are a HUGE pain. There was a issue with the high pressure fuel pumps cracking on the fuel outlet to rail fittings. but there was a recall on them. other then that nothing more then any other engine, occasionally a injector goes down. At our shop we have had prob 10 or so with dropped valves and a handful have had a rod let go and come out of the block. one of our other stores has had severe catastrophic failues also.
