First off, I have been reading the forum for a few weeks and have learned a great deal from posts. It certainly seems like there is a wealth of knowledge here. My dilema: I need to purchase a new truck very soon as my old one is $1,000.00ing me to death. I have narrowed my choices down to a new Western Star 4900SB with a Detroit DD15 engine or a glider kit with a Cat C15 475HP. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Also, any experiences with the 2012 or 2013 Detroit DD15, good or bad, would be very helpful in my decision. The truck will be used as a dump truck in the summer and a log hauler with a 5th. wheel in the winter. Thanks for any help.

for your application, I will assume a lot of shorter distance driving, under 200miles 1 way, a fair amount of idle time. dpf's do not like short duty cycles, especially alot of back and forth 50-100 mile trips, the truck doesnt run long enough at speed to do a complete regen= problems, and parked regens, lots of them. so my opinion as a mechanic would say your best bet will be a glider with a pre 2007 eng. as far as the 2012 detroits, again looking at your application, you will have issues, regen, not great horsepower makers in my opinion, they dont like dirty/dusty conditions, etc. just my .02 worth

I would go with the glider kit with a cat hands down.
