ECM's are actually pretty tough. They can survive quite a beating electrically and mechanically. But, they do fail. Why... Usually some kind of electrical shock or spike, like a really abusive over voltage during a boost. ECMs can get moisture inside and rust and fail that way. Trucks can get struck by lightning. Random internal failures and so on. Connectors and wiring are always the weak point. I have seen many many times ECMs get replaced and the new ECM does the same thing because one little power wire was rubbed through and corroded open somewhere out of view. If you know how to test for power and grounds you should have removed the OEM connector at the ECM. I think there are about 3 or 4 pins that get constant battery power and another 3 or 4 that have constant ground. International makes the harness. The main power and ground wire from the batteries split into the 3 or 4 wires for the ECM. I have seen the butt connector corrode so the ECM is not powered. Another pin will have your ignition power when the key is turned on. If you have checked this to be ok, and the ECM will not communicate with a laptop, you may be looking at an ECM. Try to call around to other local shops and see if they have a test ECM they would let you plug in to confirm if yours is dead or not. If you buy a new ECM, once you remove it from the box you cannot return it. A new ECM will also be blank and must be programmed. So you really have to 200% sure your ECM is dead!!!

I had pretty tough day today, and I learned that the ECM is more powerful force in shutting off the Engine. I have 2007 International 9400i, and the Engine couldn't start and I was getting the Low oil pressure and High Water Temperature warnings. Also, there was no fuel getting into the Engine after turning the ignition. The Problem? 20A fuse at the Battery location.
