Oil change in rear drive axles/diff

    Changing the oil in my 379 petes axles/diffs. When I drained the oil it was above the plug in the middle of the diff cover. About 1.5L above on the back axle and 2.5L above on the front axle. Is this normal? Always thought you filled to the plug and that was good. Do you fill the rest through the breather? According to the oil samples the back is 14L and front is 16L capacity. While I am changing the oil in these is there any other oil I should be changing in the back?

    Yep to the bottom of the fill plug, if you try and have more than that it just runs out. Never ever try to ad more by the breather tube, you will be placing excessive pressures in the rear axle housing. I know a guy who did fill er up by the breather, that was a mess.

    Fluid you're draining doesn't look like dirty/chocolate milk, does it?

    My Mack rear was getting water in it every time I drove in the rain and then blew a wheel seal; I didn't know enough about rears to know and the Mack dealer had to fix this issue 4 times until they (finally!) figured out the forward rear needed to be re-sealed. I know your truck doesn't have Mack rears, but thought I would mention water intrusion but that still probably wouldn't account for the extra fluid.

    You been fording rivers lately? Ice-road trucking on thin ice?

    I can't say, but does the power divider have a separate reservoir for lube?

    Filled to the plugs. I am starting to wonder if the previous owner had over filled them. Came out blackish and smelled like used gear oil. Was time for a change. Could only find the 2 drains on the diffs so am going to guess everything is on the same reservoir.
