Hi my question is the last 20 k my engine cat c13 use more extra oil between every oilchange,before my last 280k everytime max 1/4-1/2 gallon extraoil,now the last 2 oilchange everytime extra between 2-3 gallons oil,is this a sign for the future to do a overhaul on my engine now i have 783k ,the engine runs very nice and a have a very good mpg,only i thinking why this happen with the extraoil somebody knows maybe something iam not a mechanic only pay for the work.thanks for you answers

older engines get tired and use oil is the sinple answer
if it isn't on the ground underneath you it isn't a leak
and you would have to tear down the engine and rebuild it most likely

As I've been told, the smaller displacement engines typically will not see the same service life as their larger counterparts.

I have a Prostar with a Cummins in it and was concerned about oil useage and sometimes low pressure (200,000 mi) I had the oil filter changed (wasn't due for oil change) and believe it or not that took care of the low oil pressure. As it starts getting close to oil change time it will go thru about 1gal @3000mi. Dealer said no problem? They don't consider it excessive til it's useing 1gal EVERY 1,000!!!
