Most likely a rear main leak. Too much fresh oil on bottom of engine will now flag you by DOT...

Rear of the rocker cover, cam shaft caps or head gasket. I don't get too concerned about leaks. Every engine leaks oil. The ones where you can see - drip drip drip, yah, those need to be fixed. The others that just need a good wash every month or two are just a waste of money in my opinion, just a cosmetic repair. You're really not fixing anything, the engine will run the same, have the same power and fuel economy. All it does is cost you more money.

the isx has the famous rear leak. from o ring seals somewhere in the top left corner. it's not bad. just enough to discolor the engine

the biggest problem from what i've been told so far. is the front cover warping. has to be taken off and machined. and resealed. $3500 i was quoted. right now it's got jb weld to slow it down. started off as 1 gallon every 150 miles. but it's slowed to 1500 miles. can't really see it as messy underneath. where it shows the most is the right fuel tank looking oily black.

just gives me an excuse to wash the truck every two weeks now.

when you have clutch put in, have the rear main seal replaced.

if he has the cummins isx it could also be the flywheel housing gasket,or if it is leaking down the side at the rear it could be the camplate covers or headgasket. but knowing exactly where it is leaking and some good pictures could help us narrow it down.
