I have a 2004 Western Star with a C15 MBN motor w/800k miles
My question is:
My oil pressure stays at around 60psi while driving, but flux's and bounces between 58-62 as you watch it. I have a mechanical and a digital gauge and here is how it goes. As I drive down the the road, it goes 63, 58, 59, 61, 58, 63, 57, 59.... it does the same thing when I'm parked withi the idle bumped up. it has done this for over a year now. I'm not sure if it is maybe just the sensor is bad, or is it needing maybe some new mains put in?? I had it at Peterbilt for an overhead adjustment and the mechanic said everything looked great up top and was super clean. No signs of wear at all, and every oil sample comes back perfect. It burns no oil at all between the 25,000 miles I put on it for oil changes.

engines don't fluctuate, period. so you can rule out the motor in any shape or form.
other then the rise and fall with the engine speed. -
unless you have an obstruction somewhere small or its an electrical guage gone bad? maybe something internally loose?
-
guage or sending unit, more than likely. as long as it runs good, oil sample comes back good, keep the overhead ran, run the crap out of it, you won't hurt it.
-
There is nothing wrong with that, some fluctuation is normal. It is unrealistic to see 60 psi constantly. I would prefer to see some minor needle or number changes just to make sure my gauge isn't stuck!
-
A mechanical guage won't show that much fluctuation, unless there is something drastically wrong. Can you define a mechanical guage?

If the sensor doesn't fix it, I would think the oil pump was maybe going bad??? But I need to start with the cheapest thing, and I know that. Just looking for comments on others trucks gauges. -
my volvo with a cummins was doing the same thing on the analog gauge and the digital read out, but wouldn't do it on the techs laptop when plugged in,
he said they have 2 sensors one for the gauges and one the ecm, replaced the one for the gauges and problem solvedSHC Thanks this. -
the pump is part of the engine. and the engine doesn't fluctuate. like i stated earlier.
you've probably got the same problem some of us get with the coolant temp. a bad sensor. those can fluctuate. -
