can anyone tell me if this an upgrade from the factory turbo found on 3406 B model Catepillars? i have a brand new one on the truck now just wanted to see the difference and up to what HP range would it support? in comparisson to the other turbo upgrades listed for the b model cats.

ive compared it to other 3406b turbos and it appears to have a larger compressor wheel and exhaust housing as well.

any info would be great how many PSI should i be expecting to see on my guage MAX throttle when boosting?(i havent installed guage yet but trying to get an area of where it should be).

My turbo got to acting up and I thought I would get a B/W 199119 which everyone said was the way to go for more power, when I called to order it they said the numbers had been changed to 178063, after installing it I found it lagged a little and would try to heat when pulling at lower RPM's in overdrive. Your right it does have a big compressor wheel and exhaust housing(to big I think), and takes quiet a bit of fuel to light it or at least it seemed to for me, I've been experimenting with fuel settings, turning one round to it while on my first trip and then another round when I got home which now has me at around 5 or 6 rounds of fuel all together I think. If I had it to do over I would have bought a cartridge for my 177148, as far as boost goes mine is still about the same or maybe a little lower due to the larger housing not having as much back pressure. Definetly get a boost gauge I bought one for one of the newer engines as they will go to higher numbers than the one I had which pegged out at 30#. With all the mods your making you need plenty of gauges and keep a close eye on all of them.

What he said, that is a good turbo, but it is a replacement for the 460peec turbo so it does have a larger housing on it. Anymore I think the 177148 wastegated turbo is the cream of the crop on a B/C model.

You should be fine with the boost that turbo will make, I have seen close to 50psi after my aftercooler and haven't had any problems.

    puncher Thanks this.

the only thing i did notice is that right before 1500rpms she has a bit of a lag but not to much, puncher when you say you turned in the fuel do you mean on the PUMP?( you turned them out or in)? i just finished resetting rack screws just about all the way out right adjusted right on the point of the rack, bascially all the way out, they havent been turned in yet.

I turned them out, giving more fuel, but always turn both screws equally. With the screws almost out as you have them be sure to let out of it every little bit to get air, and above all watch your pyrometer (close).

Oh one other thing, I've read all your post and I know your going for a hot rod (ain't we all), don't let anybody tell you to make money let it pull down into the low teens, 1500 RPM's is as low as I ever go and that is if I'm sort of free wheeling or maybe if I know I can crest a hill at 1500, other wise I down shift at 17 or 18 depending on load and terrain.

I'll run down to 1000 rpms. But I don't give more than 10 psi of boost to it when the Rs are below 1200 and I don't do it for long. But when you're empty and 1000 rpm and 2 psi boost ain't gonna hurt nothing.

I used to run high Rs when I had some drilled out B nozzles and my mpg was in the 5s. With stock C nozzles I am in 6s to over 8mpg when empty and running 55.

Depends on how things are set up, high boost at lower rpm is hard on parts, and your HP will increase with rpm. Most mechanical engines are well off boost at 1000rpm.
