Oram, to answer your question no you don't need the extra splits to drive with this new engine, but they are nice.
bubba3685, you have some serious problem with your truck and your engine from the sounds of it. Can you take a picture of the intake side of your engine for me so I can see what epa model it is? 2010 or 2013 epa regulation engine.

At least some of your problems are not engine related. How much, you can figure out only after you found the electric glitch. That can mess up lot of things.
The 13 speed nice to have, but I was told, the overdrive transmission has more parasitic loss, even if you use it in 11-th gear to cruise. -
I beleive the new ISX has a single cam. Not a double cam like the older models and uses electronic injectors instead of cam operated. Cummin uses the space used up by the second cam to improve ther air flow into the cylinders. This should be a good improvement to the motor and much fewer moving parts.
