When splitting the first 5 gears(18 spd) high to low or vice versa, the split takes place instantly, without breaking the torque with the throttle, resulting in the slamming into gear. Any ideas why?

There is no reason why a split couldnt be made in neutral. The only reason not to preselect a split too long in advance is to eliminate pressure on the selector fork in the rear of the gearbox. If a split is made the only thing holding it in gear is torque, therefore when the split has been selected, you are comitted and have to make the change. If you decide not to make the change, rather split it back.
