2 days ago i had worst day in my life, my turbo died on a road, i started to pull to the side of the road when i noticed my RPM started to go up on their own. I parked the truck and my RPM were going up up up. I turned the key off and took it out and my truck was still working on its own. Seems like the oil went in and started to burn. The RPM on the truck were at max 3000!! maybe higher (the gauge limit is 3000). I ran out, thought its gonna blow or burn, from the side i couldn't even see my truck that's how bad was the smoke. After about 5 min it died, couple gallons of coolant went through the top cap (couldn't hold it). Towed it to some diesel shop that was right at that exit. They took oil pan out and told be that rods seem fine, then they went deeper in to the engine and supposedly tried to reversed it to get oil out that might have clogged it. But the engine still wouldn't turn, they tell me that i have to overhaul it. I still want to tow the truck to the closest kenwort dealer because those guys doesn't seem like they know what they are doing (Southern Diesel Repair, exit 125 on HWY 26E 15mi from Columbia. I am thinking worst case, and want to know what can i expect to rebuilt the engine (parts, labor worst case scenario)? I don't know if i can even afford it. This is gonna break me. 2006 Kenworth, T200, ISX only 675,000mi. So what can they charge me? Also i am from Cleveland, OH and truck broken in Columbia, SC

a buddy of mine runs a shop and he did a quote on a isx inframe and he stopped at $22000 and told the boy he just cant see him paying that in a truck that isnt worth much more than the overhaul.good luck! it may not be that bad for you but from what you said happened it could of seized up when it burned all the oil it was running on.

I have a friend who rebuilt his N14 about 2 years ago. It cost almost $10,000, but they didn't replace the injectors. He has since had to replace all of the injectors. It is difficult to tell exactly what an overhaul will cost until you get into the engine. I had to replace a turbo on one truck about 3 years ago and it cost over $2,700 with labor and parts. I have CAT engines and those are more expensive than Cummins. I would get the engine to either a Cummins dealer or KW and see what they say. If the cost is too great, you may find a used engine that you could drop into the truck for less than an overhaul. I would expect you to spend $10-15,000 for an overhaul.

Sorry to hear about your problems. It doesn't sound good from what you are saying happened. Sounds like you got the block. You are probably going to need an engine swap out. Before you take it somewhere else I would take that into consideration (going to a shop that will/can swap engines out for you). If you need a engine I might be able to get you in touch with someone that might have one (if you go with a used one).

I live about 45 miles east of Columbia. We buy parts from all of the big places over there but I really don't know any shops over in that area that I could recommend.

There is no one price for a rebuild. You can rebuild an engine a 100 different ways. It all depends on what you want to spend. Some guys don't replace the head, others do. Some guys go for extras like a new water pump, turbo, injectors, and so on. A basic rebuild is just six new pistons and liners. You can go as far as replacing the rad and air to air too if you want. So it is a matter of how much of the engine/truck you want to replace. I am sorry to say that in your case you may be looking at a complete drop in engine from the story you told. Sounds like the turbo did go and dumped all the engine oil into the air to air and eventually into the intake. The oil got into the engine and the engine ran away. Two things happened that have probably ruined it. First, the rpms were crazy high like you said causing main and rod bearings to score the crank. Second, the engine was starved of lube oil since it got pumped into the air to air and has probably scored the crank. This is why they can't bar the engine over. If you are not confident with the shop your truck is at now, then get it out of there. For sure the mains need to be pulled down and inspected. If the crank is pooched I would just replace the entire engine and be done with it! Complete engine replacement is ultimately the most expensive option, but it is the one option where everything on the engine has been replaced. Every seal, every gasket, every part! You even get new sensors and wiring harness. You'll also have a better warranty with it too.

Talked to a guy that spent 20 grand to rebuild his ISX.
You cannot compare a N14 to a ISX, not even the same design engine.
Like Heavy D said, there is no one price because there is no telling how much damage the run away engine could have caused.

I suggest that you bring it to Cummins, rent a car and go home... it will be cheaper then staying in a motel and having to pay for food.

as Starline said you can't compare an N14 to an ISX. I rebuilt my N14 7yrs ago and the parts were only $2700 from Cummins.

You might consider getting an ISX from a salvage yard for probably $10k installed.

Pretty close. I am in Canada. You can get them in different levels of dress, I think Canadian it is around $28000ish complete for the engine.
