Is this a question for a grown man to ask?? Why wouldn't a plugged MUFFLER cause poor mpg?? A motor needs to breath freely, less restriction means better performance.

If the muffler is wide open it won't cause poor mpg, if its plugged it will.

Some rot on the inside and the internal baffles fall down and restrict the muffler.

The internal combustion engine is like the human body, just like the human body it needs air, fuel, and to exhaust. Choke that off a bit and what happens?

    the muffler is wide open.

    it's impossible to plug up.

i drove with a dead turbo for 3 months. black smoke and all. the muffler was black. but not one ounce of soot came out when it was pulled.

sitting in the shop. totally wide open still

i wouldn't even say the thing had baffles. just one noise suppression tube. and the muffler casing. was all it was.

Some are open, some are baffled.
