I was wondering. Can bad shocks on an air-ride trailer be a contributing factor to a jackknife ?

I sugest no. But bad brakes, wrong ajusted LSV, leaking air bags - yes

Trailers jack knife because they are moving faster than the truck is when slowing down. If you were braking on really really bumpy roads with bad shocks those axles will have reduced contact with the road surface, and therefore, reduced braking effort. Some axles can start to bounce when the wheels are locking up on a smooth road surface, so again, reduced contact with road surface. So technically, yes, bad shocks can be a contributing factor, but not THE factor, to a jack knife.

aye , I agree the main factor to a jack knife is driver error in some way. I was just trying to get some opinions from people with expertise in the matter. An insurance adjuster for a friend of mine was being told one of the reasons of the jack knife could be that all 4 shocks are not working on his air ride trailer. The area it happened was slightly wet and it does tend to bounce trucks at the spot it happened. It's an old truck lane .No one got hurt and nothing got hit but some damage to the back of the cab. We are just trying to insure anything on our end that could prevent any future accidents.

Did the adjuster/inspector pull out the shocks to determine all 4 were not working? If not, and they were not visibly leaking, I'd say the adjuster was trying to dance his way out of paying a claim.

The insurance has already cut the check for the repairs. We were just trying to make sure nothing happens in the future so no one gets hurt . Yeah, 3 shocks were bad. The reason we thought they were bad is because the trailer seems to have to much bounce to it when you jumped inside on the tail
