Replacing The Transmission

I am off for a vacation this week, but I have to drop my 2006 Mack off at the shop so they can take it to the dealership and have a new transmission put into it. It has right at 136k on it right now, and we are finding problems with all of our 2006 Macks. Seems like there is a synchronizer that is wearing down inside the trans, and it causes it to grind a little bit on the range shift, occasionally slip out of gear, and leave quite a bit of metal on the magnetic plug when the fluid is drained.

So far, 8 of the trucks have been checked, and all 8 show the signs of this problem, with mine being #8 and having been checked Tuesday morning.

Of course the good news is that since I am off anyhow, I am not losing access to my truck, and will have it fixed while I am off, and I don;t have to go through the indignity of using whatever old spare truck is sitting around the shop. The bad news is that after spendign 135k miles getting the trans broken in so it shifts right, it turns out that I'll have to start over with another trans.

Well, I ran it down to Indiana today and dropped it off at the shop, and they will take care of getting it over to Pozzo Mack in Gary Indiana to have the trans done. As long as it is in for that, I also asked to have the front end aligned and have them check the caster on the left front tire, and asked to have the 150k service done, running the overhead and setting the fuel injectors on it. Should be ready by the end of the week, and if it is, I will probably pick up something over the weekend to haul.

Seems like a crop of defective transmissions.

Seems to be just a short run of them. Our 2005 daycabs are specced identical, and they are fine and have a year longer use on them. probably a run of parts that didn't get heat treated properly made it through the process.

Called the shop euipment manager this afternoon and found out that my truck won't be ready until this coming Monday some time, so I will probably pick it up on Tuesday morning. And almost as soon as I tgot off the phone with him, my dispatcher called with some work for me on the weekend, and he had already made the calls and reserved another tractor for me. So for Saturday through Monday, I will be borrowing a 2000 with an autoshift to get around with. I think I have a Sunday load to do followed by an early Monday one, and then I will come in to Indiana on Tuesday and get my truck back.

Last time I saw the spare I am going to use it was fairly clean, and I am not going to be sleeping in it anyway since I'll be home those nights.
