Hey guys, I have a 98 Freightliner COE and it started running really rough as I was parked. It would drop to 400 rpm n then the governor would shoot it up to 800. It would bounce back and forth a couple times n then die. If I leave it shut off for 10-15 mins it starts good, runs good n I can drive about a mile before the same problem happens again. If I restart it right away it starts sputtering right away. Coolant, oil and batteries are good...any ideas??

It sounds like a fuel issue. When last did you change the fuel filters? When a Cummins hunts like that, it usually has air in the fuel.

The fuel filter was done about a month ago. It sure seems like a fuel issue but why would it run good for a few mins after being shut off for a while?

The #1 injector is shot. It controls the timing. If it's faulty it will shut the engine down. To test it take an ohmeter and check the leads to the injector. No ohms, the injectors shot.

It could be a fuel pressure issue, I'm thinking the fuel filter is collapsing causing a restriction. Any loss in power before the shutdown?

It starts and runs fine until the injector gets warm, then the solenoid won't respond, the ecm times the engine off the #1 injector. That's why it shuts down. I had it happen last year to a N14.

Hmmm...could this have anything to do with my overhead last week where they said they adjusted my injectors?

The last time I had it running I was just gettin up a lil speed n it died right away...no sputtering...kinda like turnin the key off...

Now it just turns over but will not fire. Got a wrecker comin...what a pain in the rear...

You need to hook it to reader and see what (if any) faults are in the ECM.
