Looking to go to a bigger truck than what I have now and I'm a greenhorn.

Truck in question is a 1995 White/GMC with Cummins L10 in it with 400,000 on it. Truck body is in good shape with good paint. He indicated he bought in 2000 from a UPS fleet place. It does have the top mounts on the cab for the placard/wing like old UPS/Overnight/FedEx trucks used to have. It also looked like it had a modified oil change setup. Like it was set to have fluids vac'd out.

The L10 is tagged at 280 HP and 1070 torque with an eaton fuller 10 in it. He has never done an in frame on it but the engine looks like its original with no work done on it. It had been sitting in the same spot for a while and there were no oil/fluid leak spots underneath. He installed telephone line for companies and they (bellsouth and his main contractor) would fine him for having trucks that leaked. Nothing had excessive oil residue and the frame and engine bay was pretty much rust free. He estimated having put about 6-8,000 miles on it a year until 2008 when work came to a halt and then he went on disability.

It has bags in the back for lower/raise to hook up trailer to Pintle trailer. It had air seats, air door locks, AC (need recharge), 5th wheel lock, air brakes, heated mirror, and something called a moto mirror on passenger side with a switch on dash for it.

Engine cranked right up and oil pressure was good. It smoked during acceleration briefly and then settled down with engine speed. Not much on startup.

I'm just moving my own equipment and the largest thing I have is. 32,000lbs excavator so I'd be hauling max 40,000 with it including the tag. It has a 12' flat dump bed with wood sides. I'm in Tennessee and might move my largest machine 6-7 times a year. Going 65 max for me is fine as I do all my own stuff for my companies.

Tires in good shape, all same brand, retreads on back, good tread left all around.

Thoughts on the truck? Thoughts on engine with 400,000 on it and time to an in frame? This would be the most high mileage engine I've ever bought so I don't know much about that.

Im a newb on big trucks so suggestions on what I should look at are helpful.

It would seem to be up to the task based on what I know.

Long post, but thanks to all that comment.

Seems kinda low HP, FI your towing a trailer why do you need a "dump bed"?

Sounds like a good candidate for what your doing with it. For hauling bigger lbs you would like to have some more HP but this should work fine. One caustion is if the truck sat for several moths, some seals might stick and start to leak pretty soon. If you can get it for a good price it would be worth the risk!!

For $2500 its not bad. More than that you can get 99s and up with big N14s for power.

I picked up a '91 White/GMC COE a long time ago with an L10. I (ab)used it for a long time and it did a good job for me until a couple years ago. It burned a piston (I think) with 6??,000 miles on it. But it was a 330.

If it's only a 280, you might get impatient, but it should also last longer because it isn't working. If you're patient, lightly loaded, or OK with a sedate ride in the country it should work just fine for you.

I'm just thinking back to the morning that I was pulling the B train set home grossing around 100,000# (32+ tons on) and had to detour around the lake to avoid the parade. That hill really was too steep for that truck, but I got it home OK.

Anybody want a '91 WHM with a broke L10, 9 spd and air ride? Cheap?
