egr expense

No such thing as egr fluid. You may be thinking of DEF (diesel exhaust fluid). I cant say how much more it costs, but its commonly believed def equipped trucks are more reliable than egr only trucks. Therefore leading to less downtime and repairs. Meaning more money.

 

I will be honest i bought a 2010 peterbilt they did not have the def fluid for that year and am worried because of all the issues i hear about that system. I did not do enough research when bought the truck now i am stuck with it.It is a cummins isx cm 871. I imagine if i goe and try to sell it i am going to loose alot of money. Well it is what it is at this point and have to deal with what ever issues that come up.

 

That's not true, From all the people I talk to driving DPF trucks, its commonly believed the DPF causes more downtime because the DPF systems malfunctions and clog a lot.

The amount of def fluid used can varry considerably based on air quality, fuel quality, temperature , driving habits, stop and go, idleing etc. The fluid is only used when a regen is required. The time between regens depends on a lot of variables. the amount of fluid needed varies from one O/o tot he next. I've heard average is about 300 miles per dpf gallon. or about $1200/year for a truck running 120,000 miles/year

 

My truck does not use the def fluid that is why i am worried because i heard with out that system on the truck my truck will have alot of problems. I guess that is why they added the def fluid to the newer trucks to help out with the clogs and issues. I am stuck with it at this time and going to have to deal with what ever comes up hopefully the truck will run great. It is running great right now. Just thinking about the future. There is a member on this forum named Rawze who has a complete maintenance schedule for EGR ISX engines just like yours. He claims very little down time and excellent mileage. I suggest you view all of his posts and maybe shoot him a PM for a little advice on the correct maintenance and performance mods for your engine.

 

I tried to do what he said best I could with my friends truck. Engine was blocked up with soot where the intake man. met the engine block. It was closed off by more than 3/8". It def. runs much better now, gained 0.7 mpg. How come the engine shops don't know this?

 

Did you mean the imap sensor because i just had that cleaned yesterday that would be great if i could get that xtra fuel mileage. There are so many sensors i dont know which one is which. Lol I guess that means i am not a mechanic. I did send Rawze a pm Thanks let me see if he responds. To tell you the truth i even brought my truck to cummins and some of them dont even know how to work on these new dpf/egr motors it is unreal!! Can you explain where that sensor is the intake man? maybe i can take a look at it tomoroow to see if that is what they cleaned. Thanks

Egr- lowers NoX
Def- lowers NoX
Dpf- lowers particulate matter (soot)

On a egr/dpf truck the egr runs more aggressive causing more soot to go back through engine which is no good. Oil gets diluted faster, crap gets clogged quicker, usually less mpg.

On a egr/dpf/def truck less egr is used because def is used downstream to lower the NoX being put out. Therefore less recirculated gasses through engine. Less oil dilution, less caked up parts etc.

Im confused by your first part. All def trucks have dpfs. Not all dpf trucks have def. its common for dpf's to give problems im well aware.

Thats as long as def and all its sensors are working.
