Got an 06 12.7 detroit with 344,000 miles on it has 10 speed.
when i shift from 8th to 9th gear and from 9th to to 10 gear at about 1100 to 1200 rpm i get a delay like is sputters (as if you were to take your foot of the fuel pedal for a second) then a puff of black smoke once you accelerate for power, then once it goes past that rpm range runs great and it only happens in those gears. does it worse when loaded going up hills but also does it empty. any ideas so far ive been ignoring it bit starting to get worried. thanks

    I'm pretty sure that in 2006, it was a 14L, not a 12.7.

WAG on my part, it's likely something to do with the VGT.

I don't think they had the 12.7 in 2006. It could be egr or vgt related.

Does it have a DPF on it? I think 07 is when they started putting DPFs on so maybe not. If it does it could be that or the EGR. I'm just speculating of course but the Detroits that have the DPF seem to do this kind of stuff quite often. Thank you federal government for ruining a perfectly good engine.......sorry for the sarcasm.

It could be several things. First you need to make sure that the air cooler air charge system does not have any leaks. Then check clean and blow out the metal tubes fom the delta p sensor to the egr cooler. If this doesn't fix your problem. The delta p sensor maybe bad, the vnt vains maybe sticking in the turbo this is not a serviceable part and you would need a new turbo. Or the egr valve maybe going bad an not closing all the way

Are you sure. My buddy has an 06 shaker and it's a 14L Detroit with egr.
