I am Currently driving a Vovlo VNL 780 with a Auto Shift transmission i have

    Eaton Fuller Ultra Shift
Its the one without the Clutch just break and Gas
    Has Push Button R,N,D,Manual,L

and if you have one of these let me and experience this problem i am going to post the problem and tell you what can fix it..

My Truck has a Difficult time going into Neutral like if you Pull into a fuel island and stop then put it in neutral it will beep at you, Sometimes it goes into neutral and when u turn the truck back on it will beep at you like it wasnt placed into neutral (which takes upwards of 30 minutes to get it started)

It's incapable of Automatically shifting in City Traffic
what i mean is it misses Every Up shift and Down Shift just keeps Revving but never goes into Gear, you have to manually shift engine for it to work and run your RPM's at 20 in each gear for it to take the next Gear

Has problem on Take off at 4,5,6,7 gears mainly 5,6 Gears Engine Keeps Revving but Transmission never goes into gear

On the Down shift it doesn't down shift until about 7 rpm's and it SLAMS into 9th gear and Jerks the hell out of the truck like you just been rear ended

It has a problem going into R and D (1,2 gear) it just keeps flashing the number in the Display and takes 20-60 seconds or more to go into gear
IF you get it to go into Gear you press the Gas and it slips out of gear jumps 2-3 RPM's and SLAMS back into gear and Jerks the truck.. OR falls into Neutral

    Trouble Shooting
-Check Fuel Filter Level if over 1/2 way full drain to 2 inches from the bottom
    -Drain Air tanks DAILY
-Load Test Batteries Replace any bad battery they send Confusing signals to ECM
-If Problem Persists the next thing i found out was that i a Faulty Transmission Wiring Harness and had it Replaced which cured most of the problems
-RANGE CONTROL SENSOR! is the key that will be replaced next week im driving it as is to make money till i go on hometime

I talked to a Transmission Mechanic and they told me that thing goes out alot on the Eaton Transmissions... and that you will Never Run into that problem on a Freightliner just on the Volvo's, Pete's and KW's that have the pushbutton set up Freightliner uses Smartshift and operantly they figured out how to fix that problem..

On my autoshift I have learned this, hold the brake firmly when shifting into reverse or drive. To cure your upshifting problem let off the throttle a little and it will shift. As for the downshifting, I have always had to shift it down when going down a hill, otherwise just hold onto the brake. Its to save fuel or something like that. If that number thing starts flashing put it back into neutral, then try again. Now the other thing with the truck not starting, heres the deal, after you're done driving let it idle for 2-3 minutes then shut off the engine, you will hear the tranny shift thru all the gears and it will be ready to start again.

that started to help after i got the wiring harness replaced yesterday but it still misses and slows down enough to go back into the previous gear, Also on occasion it will go into Gear And drive like say its stop and go Traffic and it gets into 6th finally IT will Pull the truck forward even with me riding the break i had the engine protect shut the truck down today and it got loged into 6th gear took a while to get the transmission reset

I was referring to basic breaking like hitting an off Ramp just slowing down b4 u take it it will do that as well as climbing a hill

I've done that then Neutral Starts Beeping at me and it Flashes a N on the Display..

yup i do that at the Fuel pumps but like i said sometimes it gets stuck n a gear and then i cant start the truck again until neutral stops flashing and beeping (getting a dashed line in the display)

Hmm sounds odd, as for the off ramp, they recommend putting the tranny in L for maximum engine braking. Try this, flip the key on and off 5 times, and see if any numbers pop up, if they do there is some kind of error.

so here i am on Friday 6/29/07 i just left Salem VA, headed to wintersville Ohio... I'm taking I-77 and before i make it to the 1st tunnel i'm having transmission problems its not shifting into the lower gear until the RPM's reach 10 and its time to down shift again.... so i end up climbing 2 of the hills at 25 mph, as i get to the Tunnel at the state line i drop the truck (this is all in manual) to 9th engine keeps revving each rev it slightly pulls the truck and slows it down then its too slow for 9th try 8th same thing go to 7th same thing it takes 6th gear i was doing 20mph through the state line tunnel.... as i go down hill it starts shifting correctly the next grade i take it screws up again This time worse...

I down shift to 9th keeps revving truck slowing, gear doesn't take and too slow for 9th so i down shift to 8th, then a bad sound a Loud metal Sound from the Transmission RPM's still at 14, truck doesn't take gear as i press on Gas a Grinding sound starts coming from transmission then the RPM's stop Reacting to Gas peddle and drop to 7 with the gas peddle to the floor, then the push button box for transmission starts beeping (service light isn't flashing) i coasted to the top of the hill with 42,000lbs of bleach and pull off onto the shoulder at MM4, put truck into neutral keeps beeping try reverse, nothing then try drive in 2nd and 1st nothing, i try pushing break peddle to the floor nothing

i ended up getting towed to Princeton WV Exit 9 truck is in Volvo Friday, they closed for the weekend been here at the sleep inn since friday night... called volvo and they wont be pulling the truck into the shop until tomorrow.... this totally sucks,

GRRRR... i just got a call from the Dealership there isn't anything wrong with my truck they tell me all of the codes are inactive.. Well Duhhh its been shut off since Friday the computer probably cleared them.... so they take it bobtail and drive it around and he told me it shifts fine but they are going to hook to my load and drive around with it.... if they don't fix something on that truck and give it back to me and say nothing is wrong i don't care about it being a volvo I'm getting rid of it and back into a Freightliner

EATON has had a rash of X-Y shifters going bad. They are a huge problem with the auto shifts. ive replaced them in about every make pete, international, volvo, freightliner, sterling on top of updating the software in the ecm

Yeah the eaton shifter is known for going bad (well along with any eaton electronics, they should just stick to metal) but also other things on the truck are known to cause problems. Do you have qualcomm or some other telematics thing spidered through the j1939 bus? The latest qualcomm units work, but some of the old ones would do funky things and keep the transmissions from shifting right. Some of the other telematics vendors are even worse (Teletrac is incredibly bad) Also if the j1939 terminator is unplugged you can get unreliable shifts.

When I am in Neutral and i press gas i hear a sound close to the transmission I dont know wat causes it but i belive it is the shifting lever. But i also hear the same sound/ noise when i am in the city traffic and down shifts. So any ideas or suggestions??
