    Hello to all,

I've been searching for a truck for a few months now and found a 2005 t-800 with the heavy specs I need. I've heard people say to stay away from the 2005 because of the emissions, but I didn't think the 2005 Cats had the issues until I spoke with KR on RoadDog this evening.

    Any thoughts,
    thanks

KR is all about the old 12.7 detroits, not saying they are bad motors, they are great, but acerts are not all that bad, If your pulling heavy you will be much happier with the accert then a s60 detroit, both will do the job. KR suggest a s60 with some sort of pitsburgh power hop up, do the same with a C15 acert with pdi or diesel spec or bullydog and imho you will have a better motor. keep reading through these threads and in the performance section and you should find what your looking for...good luck

I have listened to KR's show and read a lot of these threads. He does seem very knowledgeable. I know there is risk in buying any truck, but I find it hard to believe these Acerts can be that bad. This truck will be used in a heavy application, usually 160,000.

I should have the Dyno and ECM report on Monday. The truck only has 442,000 on it and everything I have seen, it has been meticulously maintained, mechanically, interior, and exterior. Oil has been changed every 10k. I wouldn't think a well maintained truck like this would any motor work with these miles kind of miles. If so, maybe I should be looking at Detroit's and Cummins.

Don't listen to everything KR says, like i said before he had an operation that was light weight, flatland. Acerts are good motors, they had issues with vva's, broken rockers and rocker studs, mine has 900 000 miles on it and i broke 1 rocker, part is 150 plus labour, had overhead done on it at same time while valve covers where off and it cost me 700, had 1 vva solenoid go, i think it cost 150... motor pulls great, runs great and i'm averaging 5.8 in the winter and 6.4 in the summer... dont forget that my truck is a W9 which has the aerodynamics of a brick so that fuel mileage aint bad, In your operation pulling 160 000lbs you will not get 6.5mpg, even with a S60 detroit, don't care what KR says you just wont get that mpg pulling that kind of weight. with a C15 Acert you will see somewhere between 4.5-5mpg pulling that weight. And the ground moving torqueof a big CAT you will definately enjoy pulling that weight... my 0.2cents, if the truck looks well maitained and the report comes back good, dont bother looking for anything else

    DL550CAT Thanks this.

No reason why you couldn't get well over a million miles on that engine. I have an acert and I love it. Run the rack every 100k along with new air filters and you should enjoy it. It will certainly out perform the Detroit. Keep the rpms between 1150 and 1500. 1350-1400 cruising

It sounds like a good truck. I would not be hesitant to buy it if it is what you said. They have been around long enough that people have pretty well figured out the flaws. You need to educate yourself though. If it has not had an updates done to it you can expect to spend some money. You should ask what has been done to engine. Depending on where you run I would have Mr. Haney go over the ecm. If you can simply delete the iva functions following the instructions of someone knowledgeable. The big problems with an Acert are the ivas, rocker studs, and the injector harness. If they are set up correctly they are an excellent engine. If you are going to be doing heavy haul it is the only engine I would consider. Good Luck

I don't know if you listened to KR's broadcast last night, but I was one of the callers in regards to this truck. He said "I wouldn't buy a 2005 truck if someone had a gun to my head". This truck seams to have a good home. It is bone stock, never been turned up from 475hp. As stated previously, I should have the ECM and Dyno report next week.

    Thanks for the input
