grease monkey drivers?

If you own it you should work on it in my book .
I do all of my own work including rebuilding the engine when it is needed.

The only real way to know your truck is by getting in it, under it. and on top of it, if it needs it !!
The washing I like to leave to others and the polishing doesn't ever get done .
Tire work gets done by my tire guy here at home .

 

Yep, i do most of the work on my trk that is not covered by warranty, including the waxing and polishing. Costs to much to run to the shop everytime something needs done.

 

I think its kind of a mixed bag of people on here. There is alot of company drivers, alot of owner operators, And far number of mechanics as well. In my case I used to haul flatbed long haul to take a break from wrenching. So I am licensed mechanic with comercial license.

 

Another mechanic here but with this question if you are going to buy a truck you should try and work on it and know how to do some things at least be able to change belts hoses fuel filter and don't be scared to ask if you have a question and get a local mechanic to do as much as they can with it better service then big shops

 

Not a mechanic but I'll do anything I can handle. If I don't have the tools to do it, I'll look at getting them so I don't have to farm stuff out. I will leave the majority of motor work to someone else, as well as suspension and driveline, but that's more due to lack of appropriate tools and location than anything else.

Actually lining up stuff to do brakes for the first time soon. It seems that buying tools plus parts costs slightly more this time than paying a shop, but should cost a lot less next round.

 

This is just an opinion but the best tech or mechanic in the world can't take care of your truck like you can. When one is all you own and every thing rides on that one no-one cares about it like you.
But don't spend good money for bad witch hunting a problem either. A lot of so called mechanics do this just replace stuff till its fixed or not and send a bill anyway. There are times to get professional advice.

I will always be a mechanic I done it for to long to ever quit and still do it. Always wanted to try this from O/O side to its hard to choose.

 

I do all of the maintenance on my truck and trailers.

The only thing I really don't like to do is mount tires.

 

Driver turned mechanic here. I still have a side gig, basically doing a daycab run on my days off from the shop.

 

Was a mechanic for freight shaker when i lived up north then diesel mechanic in army then said eh why not drive them now.
