I need to replace my rubber shifter boot but don't know what I'm in for. I did notice there is a screw on the back of my shift knob. Should I attempt this or let a dealer do it? I don't want to take this apart then be stuck because I can't do it. It's a direct 10 speed Eaton

Hi Skate-Board, it's not that tough at all, I think the Scarecrow could do it, after his visit to the wizard, that is. You have to take the air lines off, and mark them, there's only 2(I think) and the shift knob should unscrew, feed the air lines through the new boot and screw the knob back on and attach the air lines. In the old days, you had to replace the brass ferrules, but I think the new ones don't have that.

Lol.....Out of stock so this could be a problem -
Like semi retired said. But my knob has 5 air lines. When I took my fittings/air lines off the underside of knob, all the ferrules came off in two pieces. Easy solution I went to my local hardware store and bought brass ferrules they sell in the plumbing parts. Not sure if they are DOT approved but they work.
IT is easy just mark the lines before you take them off. If your memory is like mine or take a picture first, that's works good also. Good luckSkate-Board Thanks this. -
Once you get the knob off, the boot itself is just some screws (6 or 8). You may have other trim that needs to come off 1st depending on the truck. Most are phillips screws, stick a screwdriver in them, then give a few sharp smacks with a hammer on the back of the screwdriver. It helps break the corrosion and you have a better chance of getting them out without stripping the heads or breaking them. If you have one, a hand impact driver works great on them if they're stubborn.

You could have a vibration isolator just above the transmission on the shifter rod. If you do take the bolt out of the isolator lift the shifter out of the boot and put the new boot on.

I thought taking the bolt out of the isolater if he has one was easier than taking the knob off and the air lines have to be un hooked no mater what. I thought that was a given.

The knob is easy. The air lines should be color coded. Take a pic with your phone so you put them back in the correct place. Loosen the lock nut and unscrew the shifter. Install new boot and put it back together.
