Hey drivers. About 15 minutes ago I heard a big pop. Sounding like a tire blowing out. Or an air to air boot popping. Truck has no turbo boost and very sluggish. Smoking like crazy too. I got it pulled over to a safe place to park a few miles down the road. Luckily I'm only an hour from home. Engine looks fine no oil everywhere or anything. No oil blew out the stacks onto the nose of my van trailer either. Air to air boots look fine but it's dark all I have is my cell phone flash light. Got a ride home I'll come back tomorrow and start pulling stuff off. Sound like the turbo? Any thoughts? #### this sucks I'm supposed to pick up in about an hour and have 3 more follow ups I'll have to cancel on.

When I got my truck back from paying shop to do a boost check and check CAC, they replaced 2 couplers. They forgot to tighten one down,.. it was a LOUD pop and I heard the whoosh from the air coming out. Lost the band clamp, but luckily I keep spare radiator hose clamps. I screwed 2 together and limped it to T/A so they could charge me $34 for a clamp. I've since bought 2 more for just in case.

But if you have no boost it has to be something visibly obvious. CAC cracked/broken? Intake tubes? Couplers? Or,.. (Gasp) turbo. Can you hear the turbo spool at all?

Check the bellow and the wastegate. Usually if a bearing tossed it there will be oil. Can you take the tube off the intake side and look in there to see if the turbine is still intact?

That's too bad Chris. Sure sounds like turbo though. Hopefully no other damage done. Can't recall for sure, but you didn't put that turbo on recently did you.

This is an older Series 60 right? Check the hose that goes from the bottom of the intake manifold to the air compressor, it tough to see because it connects on the back side of the air compressor. They get soft over time and pop pretty loud, no big deal to fix, just replace the hose. If it's still smokes, pull the exhaust off the turbo and check it out.

Well it's definitely the turbo. I see the tell tale black oil seeping out the flex pipe just off the turbo exhaust. This is BW non-waste gated turbo equivalent of PDI stage one on a C15. I hope I can get another one at a decent price. Crazy how it only lasted 350,000 miles with a tame 550 CAT flash is that normal? I expected it would be good for at least a million.

I put it on about 4 years ago. CAT checked the end play when they inframed it August '12 and said it was good. It has 115,000 miles since the overhaul and 350,000 from when it was brand new. Gave no indication. Just a pop.

I replaced mine on the side of the road when it blew. You'll want to pull off the entire intake, from the air cleaner to the manifold and flush it all out. Change the oil, put a new air filter in it too. If you can, drop the oil pan to make sure all of the bits & pieces are removed...otherwise you'll be finding 'em over the course of the next several oil changes as they get flushed out.

When you are cleaning the intake parts & pieces, use degreaser, dish soap, and whatever else you have to get all of the oil as well as any bits & pieces cleaned out...and let it all dry.

Get it all put back together, and when you fire it up it might run a little rough. Gradually increase the rpm's a little at a time as it smooths out, and when it'll run at as high of an rpm as you'd run it on the road, go ahead and let it run while you pack up all your tools...then hit the road. It'll smoke like a sonuvagun while it burns off the residual oil from the intake manifold and blows the oil out of the exhaust. The front of your trailer is going to get covered in oil, so after a few miles, find a truck wash to get it cleaned up. I was lucky and a terminal was 30 miles away and they had a wash bay, so I just hosed it off there.

Do it yourself and it'll cost you a day and the price of the turbo, filters, and oil. Have it towed to a shop, it'll probably be a few days, plus labor and the cost of the tow. It isn't a difficult job, but you DO want to be thorough while cleaning it out...otherwise the new turbo won't last long.

One more thing you might want to do is pour a little oil into the turbo through where the oil line connects before you connect the oil line and spin it by hand while you do it to make sure the shaft is lubed up before you fire it up. You'd HOPE they'd be pre-lubed when the turbo was manufactured...but it doesn't take long to do, won't hurt anything if it WAS pre-lubed, but could save some wear & tear by preventing a dry start if it wasn't.
