Ok about 20000 miles ago I pulled my tranny and installed a new rear crank seal. I put the new seal in because I kept getting a light film of oil inside the bellhousing and it seemed to be getting worse. The oil started seeping through the flange @ the starter and also where the baring tool hole is to bar the engine over. So I figured that the seal was due (700 some thousand on it). After I got it done, as I said at the top here there is about 20000 miles on it, I am seeing the light film of oil in the bellhousing again. It has not start to seep through the bolt flange for the starter or anything like that yet, but it is damp inside the bellhousing. This dampness is just on the engine bellhousing not the tranny. I can't imagine that I messed up the seal as it's not the first one that I have done. Is there any other thing that might leak oil back there like a oilgalley plug or something to that effect? I did check all the bolts on the bellhousing before I installed the flywheel and all were tight. Or am I panicing over nothing. Oh ya just for the record this was not the only reason I pulled the tranny out. Ha Ha Thanks
P.S. Oil leaks piss me off

It is probably a gasket between a bellhousing and an engine block. My started leaking shortly after my clutch and rear main seal were replaced.....

Possible it is grease from your throw out bearing. Your rear structure gasket would be an external leak. Only thing left is rear main, grease from throw out bearing, and transmission main shaft seal. I don't see a lot of transmission leaks at main shaft, but it does happen.

I had transmission shaft leak once. It was a steady leak when the motor was running drip, drip, drip marking it's spot.

Well I think I am about 98% sure that the rear seal is leaking. Now my question is WHY. I just replaced it 20,000 miles ago what the heck did I do wrong here? I cleaned the old seal off the bell housing and the crank and installed with the seal driver that I borrowed from a shop that I used to work at. Don't get it. Should I maybe put some RTV Black on the O.D. and I.D. of the seal just to give it more of a seal to the crank and bell housing? Anybody got any ideas or am I just that lucky to do a clutch and change the rear seal and 20,000 later do the seal again.

Look on the bright side...at least you don't have a brakesaver. It's sucks no doubt, I know your pain. I would not use the silicone myself, just a good oil bath and install. Those are very delicate, it don't take much to make a leak.

Ran across your thread as I was looking back over some of the older post.... Just thought I'd pass this on as I'm CERTAIN that it will dry up your leak. I had badly worn front main on a 60 series ... forgot to tell the wash rack guys to stay away from it when pressure washing engine. Needless to say, when I got to my south FL. customer and backed into the door.. idled truck to run air as I slept for a little more than an hour. Pulled away and was closing doors when the guy came and told me that I must have a bad oil leak.. walked over to the spot and there was a thick oil spot bout the size of a really big turkey platter! Found out about this product from some of Scotty Kilmer's youtube vids so I called the Mfg to ask how much to add to a fresh oil change. 4 bottles was the answer. So did that and the leak slowed over the next thousand miles or so.... at about 2200mi.. bone dry,.. along with every other little leak on the engine! Never had any increase in temps or any other problems with the motor. I've told many folks about this stuff over the years and have had many of them call me to thank me as it solved their leaks and saved some of them a small fortune. Here's the cool thing.. you can use it in your hydraulic systems... tranny... rear-ends... dino or synthetic! I've even put it in my hubs.. So.. at $10/bottle.. it was the best $40 I'd spent in a minute. If you have questions.. just give'em a call.. they are glad to answer you questions... View attachment 74488
