    Well she's officially done.
    2005 Peterbilt 379
    BXS - ACERT C15 (2004)
    595,000 original miles

Was on my 2nd trip to from Ellensburg, WA to Port of Seattle. Got about 15 miles down I90. Coming off a hill with jake on.....and pop, bamb, crack you name it. It was loud.
Luckily next exit was 2 miles down the road and all down hill. Coasted her to the exit and got off I90. Then drove it on into CleElum, WA. There I made the decision to un-hook my chassis trailer (Loaded with 55,000# of Hay on it's way to Japan).

Since I was too cheap to have a tow truck come get me. I decided to take the back roads back to Ellensburg (roughly 20 miles). Made it!!! But it was very very loud. Slapped the broken rod all the way there.

As you all can guess the block is cracked!!!

    So....
Here's what I am up against and looking for some advice from all you out there!!!

    Options I have:
    Buy a short block
    Buy a long block
    Part my BXS out
Buy the following used motors and possibly rebuild:
    BXS
    MXS
    NXS
    3406E
    6NZ

What are good resources to find or locate a motor?
What advice to you have for buying a used motor?

Since I also need a new clutch the Transmission is on the floor. Mechanic has already purchased the $900 Eaton overhaul kit and will also inspect the slip clutches. Any other advice on the Transmission overhaul?

The new clutch will be an Eaton 208925 (2050# max torque).

I think that's about it for now.

Please any input or advice you have.

ESPECIALLY ON WHAT YOU WOULD DO MOTOR WISE!!! CAT POWER ONLY TOO!!

Thanks for all your input and advice in advance!!

    Oxbow Thanks this.

Wow that sucks! I would put a single turbo C15 in it but that's just me. 6NZ or you could also buy an MBN and... well we can't mention such things around here anymore... but you could build it right so to speak. Is your mechanic independent? Big time dealer shops won't do that kind of swap. BXS or newer will be your only options from a stealership. Sorry can't help more. Good luck.

    Thanks for the input.
Luckily I have a mechanic doing the work (on the side) that has been working on CAT motors for 10+ years. He's the head mechanic on a fleet of 50+ Pete's. So he knows all the tricks of the trade and can basically rebuild a motor in his sleep!! Plus I will get the full CAT warranty when the work is all done.

Just need to figure out what CAT motor I want and then locate and buy it...
I will be on the phone tomorrow with KC Truck Parts and hopefully find one.

What other Wholesale Parts places are good to talk to??

    Thanks

get you another bxs and single turbo it. have the best of both worlds. and also have plenty of spare parts from the blown engine laying around when you need them.

Still don't know why you would want to take the twins off, a friend of mine that used to be on here switched his 6nz from a big single to a set of Acert twins and picked up around .7 tenths with the swap. The twins have never been and never will be the issue with the Acert.

Any 70 pin cat will set in were that engine is and plug into the truck harness without issue so you have a few options on engines.

I agree with smokin cat, you can do a 6nz ecm and use the bxs with twins. You will be more than happy. Is the block unrepairable? I have seen some pretty good size holes repaired before and out lasted engine. A good 6nz rebuilt would be my choice but they are getting expensive, I have found the acert blocks much cheaper and just as useable in the 6nz configuration. Bxs has 6nz cam sensor location.

+1 on the BXS and twins. Like has already been said its a 70pin. The twins are good....an acert is good with the right programming. (please don't throw anything at me!) I have heard of many with twins on a conversion and doing very well.

I guess it would also depend on what you have on hand and the amount of money you will have to invest in whatever you do. We had this happen a year ago to an MXS and replaced it with a 6TS. Although we had the 6TS on hand. Used Mawk Industries to get an adapter built to go from 120 to 40 pin. Worked very well. Had a few things to work around with the multiplexing, but all in all is great. Put a pre low nox 550 file in it....80, 0 fls/fts....set injectors up and he has picked up 7-8 tenths and LOVES driving it. Although the MXS was a stock 475...so you would figure as much.

Like maggard said, the 6NZ would be the way to go...but an old acert would be easier to find. Rebuild with the lower compression pistons....keep the twins....7CZ program....and the right turbo and you would tickled to death.

If your open to anything, and money is not a huge problem, this would be the time to build it the way you and exactly the way you have always wanted. Do it right, and do it once, and be done. Keep us posted on what you decide!

yes an a-cert is good until it has to be worked on. throw away the high comp. pistons and use low comp pistons with the twin turbos would be great. but when one of those (great twin turbo's) goes and wipes the other one out. see how much the price difference is in single turboing it and replacing the twins. see how much it cost when you have to replace a water pump with those twins in the way. plus a 6nz will have a shorter stroke crank compared to an a-cert crank. as I said another bxs would be ideal with single. plus you don't have to change any rocker arms or jake brake or cam gear. plus cam sensor is already in the right location. and the funny part almost any cat shop will work on it as long as you have a 6nz serial# to work off off. because that is basicly what you will have except for the longer stroke crank. the 70 pin ecm from the bxs acert wont work though. a pre acert 70 pin will.

I've heard that a MXS turned back to a 6NZ (turned up of course) is supposed to be the ultimate draft horse stump puller in the Cat world.

I would stick to some variation of a C15 though, as the front and rear structure seals are superior to the 3406's. Had a shop do the front one this summer and I'm looking forward to doing the back myself this winter after I saw what they charged for the front!

If that truck's got full locking AirTrac rears and a 18 speed though you should probably just sell it to me, Looks pretty close to something I'm in the market for!

Edit: Try Holst Truck parts out of Ucon Idaho, they've got plenty of motors kicking around. Their web site isn't that great but just call their number on there. Try to get Shane or Dane.
