95 Freightliner fld120 - speedo not working correctly

    I ride with a buddy of mine on the farm hauling grain and equipement and the truck he uses is a 1995 Freightliner fld120 with a 12.7 Detroit and a Super 10 Tranny. The problem that he is having is that the speedometer doesnt work correctly. It starts to register when driving around 50 but it shows that he is going around 20. He knows what gear and engine speed the truck should be running to drive 40 and 60 but i drive from time to time and it makes me uncomfortable. We washed the truck yesterday and for about 30 minutes or so the speedometer went to working correctly then went back to not working. My question is where is the speedo sensor located so it could be adjusted or the wiring checked for abrasions. Im an electrician but i dont know very much about semi trucks, regular cars and trucks is a different subject because i work on vehicles all the time.

    speedo sensor is on the back of the trans near the output shaft. check the wires you can pull it out and clean any gunk off the end of the sensor as well and see if that helps

    Check that the yoke on the rear of the transmission is tight. It sounds to me that you may have a wiring issue to the speed sensor, check for green in the connector. Speed sensors generally don't fail intermittently, possible, but they usally just stop working when they fail.

    Intermittent issues are usually wiring or a loose trans yoke, or the speedo head itself could be bad.

    You may have a dual sensor, meaning 1 sensor with 2 plugs. 1 is for the engine ECM, the other is for the speedo. If you do, just swap plugs, if the speedo starts working, it's the sensor. If the speedo works on the other plug, then the engine ECM will be getting a bad signal. That could cause a check engine light and depending on the perameter settings cause a derate.
