Talked to a friend whom used to be a FDOT commercial vehicle inspector now turned FMCSA AUDITOR. He said as long as there are no metal cords showing it is fine. But he also said it depends on the officer also. Tire is brand new (30,000 miles,on it) Almost Looks like someone took a knife and sliced the tire, don't ask how it happened because I am unsure. I used the tire for about 10,000 miles since the pic, and took it off and put on new tire. The cut section is about to separate from the tire. In other words if I were to continue to use it I would loose a piece of the tread area about 10 inches long and about an inch wide (not a very deep cut in terms of the width of the tire, just shy of the first major groove). The issue I see is running it with that little section gone and DOT seeing that. I think it would stand out on a spread axle flatbed. As I mentioned the tire is new Bridgestone and I hate to scrap it. The question would you run a tire like that?
Just as a side note I also thought about selling it also. Possibly putting it on a site like CRAIGSLIST. That is also an option.
Would you run this tire?

I would take it to a cap shop and have a new cap put on it. Way cheaper than another cap or new tire. Keep it as a spare or save it for the next tire change.
You should be able to get that tire capped for under $100. We can in Montana at least.Jimmbuds Thanks this. -

It might make a good swing. I wouldnt do anything else with it. Not worth the hastle or worries IMO.

We run caps on all out spreads and I have only seen a couple come off(not on trailers I pulled either) the key to caps is watch your air as long as they are fully aired up you will wear them out ways before a cap comes off.
Plus a trailer tire spread tire wears pretty fast
I probably would not run that tire any more than have to I think most DOT would shut you down for it.Jimmbuds Thanks this. -
I tried to keep driving tire like this and I lost pices of tread. Fortunatly no one hert, but I'd not use this tire.
Casting looks well, so u can bring it back to retread shop to fix. They can do itJimmbuds Thanks this. -
i might run it long enough to get to a place i like to buy my tires but no i would not run the tire out like that. it looks like the cut is shallow enough it probably didn't hurt the structural integrity of the tire. but i wouldn't continue to run it for a extended period of time

As hard as it is to let a low mile, damaged tire go, you have to ask yourself what the down time risk is worth. Now that it has been run with the damage so long and exposed to so much contamination, I would not even trust the cap.
