Removing huck bolts.....Anybody?

Torch would be better. That grinder can kick out and bite you as thick as those are and I have a 6" scar on my arm to prove it

 

Drill them out. Centre punch as close to centre as you can then drill them with a bit about 2/3 the diameter as the head (has to be bigger than the huck bolt shaft). As soon as the bit gets to the base of the head it will cut the head off clean then just punch the remaining huck bolt shaft out through the back.

 

We just torch them off.

 

I prefer a grinder, but will use a drill in a pinch. Flap discs last longer than stones on a grinder for this sort of work, and don't tend to kick back if you use them properly.

 

you can use an impact wrench on them just like a regular bolt.

 

The proper way is to drill them like LTK said. Have done many. Make sure you use a Carbide tipped drill and turn it slow, a little oil on it won't hurt. If they get hot they work harden.

 

TORCH is all we use, we do it every week!!!
