Earlier last week I got into a conversation with a guy who in my opinion was full of a lot of hot air. But he did have a #### sexy 2005 379. So I dont want to dismiss everything he said.

He told me that my mufflers (Still stock and have dual exhaust that Y's out from under the sleeper and up the back. Condo sleeper with headache rack behind the mufflers) are nothing but catalytic converters and should have been replaced a long time ago.

I'm putting my truck in the shop in January for some work. Should I have the stock mufflers replaced? Would it be worth while to do or should I just leave them alone?

    Thanks,

I'm not sure about bxs but I know for a fact that the mbn had catalytic converters on them and kenworth wanted two grand instead I put on Donaldson flow thru mufflers and picked up 4/10ths and some power as well .. Each cat must've weighed a hundred pounds from being plugged with soot

Not sure what your budget is for the work your having done, but if it was mine the answer is yes. Haven't checked prices in a while, but put a Donaldson on mine about this time last year. Cost was $95 from local parts house. Replaced a walker mega flow, that developed a rattle. Wish I would of went back with the walker,it seemed to flow better.

I read the Walker and Donaldson are very comparable.

I'm familiar with Walker from my old school street racing days. Thrush or Walker turbo mufflers were the big lick back in the day.

I'm having roughly $4500 worth of work done in Jan. Adding another $1000 is not a problem if its a worth while expenditure. I'm not one of those guys who tries to work his truck as cheaply as possible.

Example,.. I replaced the windshield glass and all 4 mirrors because I felt they were too glazed over from wind and dirt etc. It bothered me at night and I am so much happier now with the new glass. The tires the truck rolls on are worth more then the truck itself. But its my livelihood and I want to be comfortable and profitable. First thing I did when I bought the truck was to put dynomat insulation on the floors and then bought the insulated molded carpet for a Coronado and put it in there. Floor is so much cooler in the summer time now. Quieter also.

If the MBN had catalytic converters then my BXS more than likely does too and with 1.2 million on the clock,.. I'm sure they are choked with soot.

Starting mid January I have a new driver going in the truck and want to minimize any problems he might have. I want him to be as comfortable as I would want to be.

What about Pittsburgh Power? They claim up to .5 mpg and 50 hp. They got quiet performance and another one that is louder than other.

It's just a Donaldson in a different box.

Those will be catalytic converters. My last truck (04 BXS) HAD them. I cut one open to see what was all in there, I can't believe those engines run as good as they do for the massive amount of restriction those mufflers have.

I still have that stock converter under the sleeper, won't give the turbo to breath, too quiet, and all I hear 50 feet behind the truck is turbo whistle.

Yeah I was in disbelief when the other driver told me I had them.

If true,.. I should be able to recycle the palladium thats in them to pay for both new mufflers and pocket some money. I sold the catalytic converters from my Silverado for $225 each.

The mufflers on the back of my sleeper are pretty good sized. Curious what they go for.

One thing that concerns me. Not sure how much effect this will have on a diesel turbo motor. But my wife's Mustang has a blower. We started at a modest 8 PSI. I upped it to 12 PSI with a smaller pulley. Really woke the motor up. It still had the stock exhaust manifolds and mid pipe. So I decided to replace the exhaust with long tube headers and an off road mid pipe. Boost dropped from 12 PSI back down to 9.5 PSI. Motor was very sluggish on the bottom end. Torq just wasnt there anymore.

I took the car to a mechanic friend and he said that was due to the lack of back pressure. Yes the motor was breathing better,.. but the lack of back pressure reduced the manifold pressure thus reducing boost pressure and HP. So now there is a 15 PSI pulley on there,.. had to upgrade the injectors and retune the ECM. Boost now shows a hair over 12 PSI and the car will giddyup.

Hopefully my truck wont lose HP by freeing up back pressure.

I read about that also on a blog somewhere. Same part#. They charge more also.

I'll have the mechanic order the Walker mufflers. I dont want it too loud. As it is I can hit the jake pretty much anywhere I want and its no louder then when I am accelerating.
