This is just a general question to satisfy my curiosity. Say for a 14L Detroit, where would you get the specialty tools needed to do an in-frame (liner puller, gearcase alignment tool, etc). It seems like a waste to buy a tool that would be used once.

You can get most of what you need at www.apexinds.com . Some tools you can get by without, some you can make with some basic fabricating skills, others you really need. For the 14L Detroit, you have to pull the pistons, rods and liners together, the rods do not fit through the liners, so a standard liner puller is useless.

They sell a liner puller but it's garbage it doesn't work that we'll bottle jack and oak 2×4 can work we have a machined extractor that I put over liner puller just need to cut threw groves in the liner it works perfect

Most of the time the tools that are inexpensive or "on sale" tend to be junk. And the ones that are good quality and expensive don't make sense to buy when you only use them but a few times. Homemade tools work the best for an o/o. Question for the Detroit liners, when you put together the Pistons and rods, you do them outside the motor with the liners then bang them in or what. I'm a caterpillar guy so I'm curious? On a cat you can put the liners in first then put rods and Pistons in. Top to bottom.
