Took truck in today to get 2 new steer tires.
Passenger side wheel studs and nuts were chewed up from previous owner hitting something.
Tire shop searched all over town looking for studs and could only find studs for dually aluminums so to get me back on road for Monday I now have about 2 and 1/2 inches of wheel stud sticking out past the nut.
10 studs and nuts cost me $300 so can I cut excess stud off with an angle grinder and cut off wheel? Is this legal?
Don't want to shell out another $180 for 10 new proper length studs.
Should I ask tire shop to remove long studs and replace with proper ones at THEIR cost? They did everything they could to get me back on road for Monday and I don't want to be a pain in their ### because I like the shop and that's where my account is.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

J. Graham Contracting Thanks this.

Would that be because of the temper of the steel and the heat caused by grinding them off?
-
it would be because of when you spin the nuts off they may scald and jam. and yes the heat factor.

Did they let you know they were putting long studs on before they did it? If so, and you ok'ed it, don't ask them to split the cost. I wouldn't if I were a shop owner. You can't expect them to stock every stud for every truck. They got you rolling which is what you wanted so cut the ends off and run a die over them (handy to have one anyways if you have trucks so consider it an investment) or suck it up and buy new ones and use those to replace rear dual studs down the road.
Heavyd Thanks this. -
Yea if u agreed to repair I wouldn't ask them for anything. I never cut customers a break when I tell them it's not right but it will work and they complain later on.

$300 for ten, wow!!
I would tell them to find other ones, ask that they eat the labor on installing the right ones and you pick up the tab for the parts. The studs shouldn't cost more than $80 for a set.superhauler Thanks this. -
i would cut them off, i would go get another nut that threads over the stud spin that on then grind it off flush with the outside of the nut this will give you a guide to keep the cut straight it will also take care of any burrs on the thread when you spin the second nut back off. might need more than one nut to get all 10 done.
