We took our t600 mbn to cat shop in milesburg to inspect/replace main bearings. I got phone call from this morning saying that the turbo has minor problems. We went there and showed us the damage on intake fin with dirt on it. I believe its the air filter I didn't replace yet. Dad wants just to replace cartridge. Whats your advice, just buy the whole new turbo or just cartridge?

If housings are fine , nothing wrong with just a cartridge.

I do a lot of cartridge only. If your fins are pitted from dirt then I would say you have a leak on the inlet side. Usually a bad filter will plug up and starve it for air if it needs replaced. I would check all my tubes and seal on back of filter even if replacing it. If you don't find where it's sucking dirt your gonna overhaul it sooner than you want

I would examine the exhaust housing closely, the turbine housing and exhaust manifold are known to crack or even erode away.

Toss that $4500 cat turbo on the junk pile and put on a Borg Warner S410G-175963 for $1786 (that's what I paid anyway back in Jan.)

I would hold off on a Turbo replacement; Pitted fins aside, i would be more concerned about leaking oil from seals: After checking the air inlet tube for leaks beginning at the air filters housing, chkg all clamps for tightness. Change your air & oil filters regularly. Just put the turbo on a watch list...it may still have several years of life. If, u replace ur filters.

My uncle had that problem with his turbo. It only lasted him 4 years after noticing the damaged fins.

To change to a standard replacement turbo on a mbn the ecm needs to be flashed to disable the ecm controlled wastegate, a BW 177148 would be more ideal, the 175963 has an exhaust housing that is too big to work on the 14.6L engine and would need to be swapped with a smaller one to work properly.
russtrucker Thanks this.
