how far do you screw in the tachometer sensor so its close enough it reads but far enough away that it does not catch and break it off?

Screw it all the way in until it touches, then back it off so that it doesnt touch anything that rotates.

Tachometer has nothing to do with the transmission. Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is on the rear of the transmission, goes in all of the way, then out 1 turn and snug up the jam nut. Don't overtighten, because it is just plastic.
