I had an "86" 362 with 400 in it. As I recall there were Big Cam I, II, and III. I do not know the years. Seems to me the first 400's came out in the mid 70's. Pittsburgh Power can tell you most any thing you would want to know about those motors. Also if you give KW the last 6 of the VIN they can tell you what motor came in that truck.

1977 is when they phased out the small cam and first started producing the big cam.

its an 81 it has the older style aftercooler correct? what big cam would it be 1,2,3? also this ttuck should have a hi flo type cooling system as well?
-
1978 I had a brand new COE Freightliner with an NTC Big Cam I 400 Cummins, 1983 switched it out for an NTC Big Cam III 400.

This forum makes my head hurt cause no one reads the previous post.
If it has the large aftercooler it is not a low flow engine, CPL number would tell you what series it is. -
I agree it does mine to. Not reading previous post and asking the same questions over and over

what do you comsider to be large? the one on my 90 350 big cam was thin and had a funny rectangular odd shape. then the older aftercoolers to me looked similar to the old a model cat engines.

Use this to look up Cummins info.
Cummins QuickServe OnlineTaildragon Thanks this. -
On a low flow cooling system, the turbocharger pipe enters the aftercooler in the front using a hose & clamp. On a traditional cooling system, the turbocharger pipe enters the top of the aftercooler with a 4 bolt flange. Only the big cam 4 was low flow.
