You mean the DOT doesn't allow the if the tread comes up to the presidents head measurement anymore?

if the tire is close enough to being illegal that you need a gauge
    it needs replacing yesterday

That was my first thought- however if it's yours you're better off keeping record of every tires tread depth at every scheduled pm for record keeping....not that I do, but good paper trailer to have nonetheless.

I am experimenting with my new set of drives. trying a totally new approach.. keeping p.s.i. as per recommendations. from tire mfr. another driver who runs with me put 120 cold p.s.i. cause it said it was the max pressure allowed. this was about 3 weeks ago. just the other day, I got out my tire gauge & showed him his center is wearing so much faster, like 3 times faster. told him i.m.o. due to over inflation. my trailer tires which have over 65,000 miles have 4 times the thread depth on the outer than the center & that was from 100 p.s.i. below 100 it looks like it is low on air, 80 is where it need to be to get even tire wear. I am tired of taking tires off premature due to my ignorance.
