A friend of mine has a 2008 KW with a 500 Cummins, it all of a sudden died running down the road, started back up and ran a few months with no issues then died again

It ran for a few hours in the shop and then died again

To me it sounds like a wire issue, he said they bypassed the ignition and still no go

    any ideas?

    Thanks for any help

    Nope. Nothing
just dies, that's why I think it's a wire issue. Not tripping anything

    does it crank?

We have a '08 T660 with an ISX. It needs something like 11.9 or 12.0 Volts (I forget the exact number) to the fuel pump or it will crank and not fire. Confused us for a while because we thought we had enough voltage but turns out we were only low by a tenth or two and that was enough to shut the fuel off.

If it's cranking and not firing maybe you have a intermittent break in that wire.

he says it cranks, also said he did replace the fuel pump

said something about low voltage to ecm but international dealer changed the ecm and no difference so they put old one back in

Yeah I bet that's the problem. We had the same thing. Charge the batteries. Sounds crazy I know because it cranks fine.

IIRC we could run ours off a funnel full of diesel but it would't fire off the pump until we put the battery charger on.

FYI we I had that problem again this morning. There must be a draw somewhere and the truck was left sitting for a week and the batteries were low. The truck would crank...not super fast bur fast enought that most trucks would at least try to start. Not the '08 ISX.

So we put the 40 amp charger on it for an hour and tried it. This time it would "kick" once right of the start but that was all. Then it just cranked. Was cranking fast enough that it should have fired.

Finally we gave it a small little sniff of ether to replace what the fuel pump refused to give and it fired right up. Once running, the alternator takes over and provides enough voltage so the truck runs fine.

How about the power wire from the battery to the ecm. Fairly common issue. We has that problem on our '03 T600 and '07 379.

yeah. The ECM is intermittently losing that 12v that it needs to pump fuel it sounds like
