Got 2,000 pounds on the flat, headed west on I80 close to the Wy. line. All the sudden "POP" takes a second to figure out what happened. Truck is slowing down, look up there's a pull off just a few feet in front of me. Just get the trailer off the roadway and everything locks up. Jump out take a look, brake can diaphragm blew out. Grabbed a vice grip, pinched the line, pulled out out of harms way. Grab my box of brass, find a plug, take hose off insert plug. Cage the spring. I was not on the side of the road 15 mins.

Now I wonder if it is a violation to have one parking brake caged. I have no air leaks, and all service brakes work, with correct adjustments.

Sometimes it takes longer to stop to take a whizz and you call that a bad day? Lol. Yep, it's out of service don't get caught.

It's not out of service. It's the parking brake not service brake. Some trucks only come with maxi brakes on one drive axle. Your fine.

Can you still order new trucks with maxi brakes on one axle? I should put it this way, 2003 could you still get maxi brakes on one axle? This is the first truck I've owned with them on both axles.

I'm perty sure u can if you want to. Lots of cheap spec company trucks only have spring brakes on front drive axle.
Put it this way. If your pulling a 9 axle lowbed and every wheel has spring brakes do you think it's going to matter much if one is not working.

doesn't caging a brake chamber render the service brake inoperable?

No. It renders the spring brake inoperable. Service is fine.

Trucks with spring brakes on only one drive axle are supposed to lock the power divider when the parking brake is set to comply with the park brake on all drive axles rule. The gauged spring brake has nothing to do with service brake operation and I do not believe is out of service criteria and you may have to explain brake operation to Barney and remind him this is to get to the nearest repair facility. Barney mad, your out of service! Just be nice and remind him you still have one more parking brake than many trucks already, he probably does not know either.

No big deal -- 6x2 tractors only have 2 maxi brakes & they're fairly common...
