I may buy one next week. Not my first choice of engines but the whole package is solid for the price.
Here's what I know for sure:
1.500000 on the block
500,000 on the inframe.
200K on a bearing roll in.
Straight pipes
PP manifold
Non waste gated turbo.
ECM tuned.
Injectors matched.
Just has the one fuel filter, CAT oil & filters used exclusively, I believe.
I know we can't talk about certain mods, mainly looking for "proper care and feeding" and "how to drive " type of advice. Id like to get 2-3 years out of it before major work. Is this realistic?
The last CAT I drove was a 3406B. So it's been a while.

Any paperwork on any of the "repairs"....?
-
Yes. All work was done at a local dealer. Except the "tune" but that was local too.
-
If you know the people/truck and it was done right I wouldn't be afraid,
On a hill , When your putting the boost to it Don't lug the engine with a load. Keep rpms at 1400 or above or downshift ... If your just taking it easy it doesn't matter...
The head gasket will thank you..... -
Wonder why it doesn't have primary and secondary fuel filters? I thought they all did. Sounds like a good motor as long as the samples, documents check out. They spent the money on the upgrades needed to make it a good motor so except for some hard parts (that really don't matter) it's practically the same reliable workhorse as a 6NZ now. I do wonder why they wasted money rolling in bearings only 300k after an inframe unless that is not included with silver or gold kits?

The roll in:
The guy is "old school"
As in- he started in 1958. He's 73 and figures it's time to work on his model T. -
That's expensive pm I guess he could have spent on worse things but at least you know he took care of it.
-
Trans and diffs are new, not rebuilt, winter and summer drive tires on Alcoas. New tie rod ends weren't enough, so he replaced everything below the steering wheel. New Webastos, etc, etc..... -
The engine is basically a 6NZ, all it needs is a cam and pistons.
-
What RPM do I drive and pull hill at?
Are Cat brand filters worth the cost?
Do I need a secondary fuel filter? If so, what is best?( I've had Fuelpro's on all my Detroits.)
That's the kind of stuff I think I need to know.
Thanks
