I have a 2001 Volvo, 13 speed, with a very slack gearshift. I am not much of a mechanic, but it looks like the shift mechanism runs from the bottom of the stick across the truck then forward into a rectangular box. There is another rod going from the box into the top of the gearbox.
Where do you think my prob stems from, and how to fix it!
    Thanks

I do not quite understand your explanation but they normally have an isolater bushing between the upper and lower gear shift shafts under the floor. There is also a o-ring assy. in the top of the 4 bolt housing that should be replaced while you are there. If you are not able to replace brakes and ballljoints on your car you should probably send it to a shop.

Generally the bushing must be torched out and the new one drilled to accept the bolt and plastic spacers. Inside the shift housing is a "dog" that slides into a groove cut into the shift lever....with the age of yours, the slot is likely worn excessively and will need to be replaced.

Thanks for the advice BoxCar, don't worry I will be getting it fixed in a proper shop!
I really just wanted to try and understand the mechanism and how it should work so will have a poke about tomorrow and apply your experience to my eyes and see if it's all clear now!
