My truck recently dropped dramatically in fuel mileage. Over time it has slipped from 6.5 to 5.9. The last two trips it has fallen to 4.7. CAC good, new fuel filters, new air filters, less than 2 years on a BW 171702 turbo, good fuel pressure (but I have it bumped up some). About 2 weeks ago I noticed that the fuel in the tanks has turned black. I was told that is very common to a Detroit. I thought maybe bad fuel so I started buying it elsewhere. Any thoughts anybody. Thanks
really bad fuel mileage in a 12.7

You more than likely have asphaltines in your tank. Possibly algae . Treat with a biocide and keep plenty of fuel filters on hand.
You may have to change them a couple times until you get rid of whatever one of those issues you have. -
Lyle is probably correct. Just had this problem with our building generator at work last fall.
bigguns Thanks this. -
crap fuel......

Also could be seals in fuel pump, lets engine oil into the fuel and gets returned to the tanks. Not sure that this would effect fuel economy though.

Throw in a cup of javax in each tank and see what happens.

Never heard of javax. What is it?
